AP says the Senate Agriculture Committee praises farmers for their vast contribution and notes assets at 339 billion, making up three-fifths of U.S. corporate capital. It cites 19.2 billion in 1972 income, rising production costs, soaring debt to 70 billion, and millions of jobs tied to agriculture, urging praise over criticism.
Casebearer in pecans causes early drop of small nuts in southern Kansas. First generation larvae bore into developing nuts in late May to mid June, entering at the nut base and feeding inside. A single larva can ruin a whole cluster. damaged nuts drop or shrivel. Control uses insecticides around nut tip browning with possible second spray after 7 to 10 days. Malathion 57 percent BC at 1½ pints per 100 gallons. Guthion 50 percent wettable at 1 pound per 100 gallons.
The Kansas Sheep Expo debuts June 2 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson with Miss Bo Peep selection, a lamb cookout king contest, a predator calling test, and a lamb production contest. Dr. George Ahlschwede of Kansas State University notes the event promotes the state sheep industry and aids producers.
Kansas State University announces four new wheat varieties Trison Cloud Sage and Kirwin. Trison and Cloud will debut in Manhattan and Wichita with releases by fall 1974. Each variety offers combinations of yield winter hardiness disease resistance and quality for different Kansas regions.
