S Sgt Cleamon Faulkner has just returned from a year in Thailand. He meets his wife Betty, now 32 and markedly slimmer, after thyroid treatment reduced her weight from 340 to 160 pounds. The couple exchange astonished greetings as reporters note the dramatic change.
TOPEKA AP The Kansas Finance Council approved a state employee pay package totaling 14.4 million dollars annually. The plan combines a five percent increase with a flat 27 dollar monthly raise for workers.
C F Pete Disney of 1102 W Elm was named the fifth member of the city housing authority in a special city commission meeting. He owns Disney's Market at 1116 N Santa Fe and will serve four years. Other appointees include Dr J C Sanders Dale McCoy Mrs Floyd Thuston and A F Van Alystyne. Mayor Reuben Burkman said the authority will advise the city commission and govern future public housing projects. The 1969 legislature increased pay schedules for state employees and authorized funds for a pay study and related planning efforts with potential federal matching money of 1.4 million, though some senators questioned combining studies.
House leaders Calvin Strowig and Glenn Smith urged Gov. Docking to present clear tax and revenue proposals before any special legislative session. Docking hinted at a session if leaders back a plan to adequately fund the general revenue with tax reform. The dispute centers on funding a $27 million school aid bill and the projected May 1970 deficit.

Neosho County planning commission discussed the second phase of the planning program at a Wednesday meeting in the courthouse. Gov. Robert Docking refused to testify before a joint House and Senate Highway Committee, saying his highway views are clear and warning that appearing would futilely try to influence lawmakers. He cited a gas tax increase and revenue distribution plans that halted the Highway Commission’s five year construction outlook.
The Senate permanent investigations subcommittee subpoenas 15 universities including Berkeley Stanford Harvard Cornell and Columbia for records on campus disruptions and groups such as SDS and the Black Panthers to see if students receive federal aid. Public hearings are hoped for in June as the panel assesses intergroup links and possible organizational roles.
John R. Robertson former Burr Oak mayor and current Arkansas City insurance and real estate executive was appointed to a four year term on the Kansas Real Estate Commission by Gov. Robert Docking. Robertson is president of United Agency Inc and succeeds Ross Wilkins of Winfield whose term expired.
