Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Near Erie Claims Two Lives

A two car collision eight miles southeast of Erie near US 59 last night killed Mrs. Lina Ann Sexton 66 and her granddaughter Ronnie Marie Sexton 10. Har ris 18 and Joyce Campbell 15, both of Erie, were injured. Authorities identified the victims after notifying relatives. The crash occurred at a county road intersection with the highway. Deputies noted the bodies and the Erie Clinic and Kansas City hospital treated the survivors. Funeral arrangements are pending with the Erie Funeral Home.

The Chanute Tribune corrects an error listing Sharon Cooper as the newly elected senior high cheerleader. Kathy Cooper was mistakenly named. Also noted is a correction about 1896 commencement site conflicting with Williams Opera House and a tassel collection from a graduate.

30 Drivers Arrested For Speeding In Two-Day Push

Police used a traffic timer on North Santa Fe and South Santa Fe reporting 30 arrests over two mornings. Fifteen speeders stopped at 35 to 47 mph in 30 mph zones along US 169. Chief Lige Matlock said the effort aims to boost safety before the Memorial Day holiday.

Showalter Seeks Re-election As County Clerk

Marion Showalter announced his candidacy for re-election as county clerk pending the Republican primary in August. Born in Neosho County and raised in Erie, he is 44, a WWII Army veteran with four children, and active in local churches and veterans organizations.

Little Boy's Fund Grows For Chanute Child Heart Surgery

Contributions to a fund for seven month old Mark Bright of Chanute total 12 dollars by noon. The boy, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Bright, faces heart surgery at Kansas City Kansas University Medical Center on June 13. The Tribune offers to collect donations as expenses mount and insurance is absent. An application to the Crippled Children’s Association is pending.

Venus Car Found In Kansas City

A 1953 Pontiac owned by Merle Venus of 1016 West 9th was stolen on April 24 from a lot behind 27 West Main. It was found abandoned in Kansas City, with condition not yet determined, police said. Recovery was confirmed by the Kansas City police department.

Governor Signs Second Commutation for Spencer

Gov. George Docking signed a second commutation of murder convict Bobby Joe Spencer from death to life in prison. A prior commutation on April 12 was deemed void on a technicality after review by pardon attorney Dale Spiegel. Spencer murdered 59 year old Rubie Blanton.

Memorial Day service set for Elmwood Cemetery Monday

Alvin F. Grauerholz Coffeyville lawyer and Kansas Park Authority member will give the Memorial Day address at Elmwood cemetery Monday at 9 30 a.m. A high school band will play and the event is sponsored by the Boerstler May American Legion post with Chanute patriotic orders participation.

Ken Malson Hurt Falling From Car in Neosho

Ken Malson a 13 year old of 802 S Western was knocked unconscious but not badly hurt when he fell from a car at 6th and La Fayette about 3 pm yesterday. He was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for examination and was released with severe facial bruises and body bruises. The Malson family said he and two to three other boys were riding on the back of a small foreign made car driven by a teenage friend when the accident occurred.
