The Commerce Department reported a 1.4 percent rise in its leading indicators for April, with March revised up to a 1.9 percent gain. The March upgrade marks the strongest monthly increase in the index to date, pointing to a significantly expanding economy in the near term.
President Nixon and Soviet leaders approved the fifth American Soviet accord aimed at preventing incidents between armed forces on the high seas. John Warner and Admiral Sergei Gorshkov signed as talks continued on European Asian issues and strategic arms limits. Separately Iola High marching Mustangs left for Indianapolis with 17 sponsors to attend Indy 500 festivities and pre race pageant.
Barbara Kihm has joined The Tribune as governmental affairs reporter. She holds a bachelor’s from Goddard College and is completing a master’s in journalism at the University of Kansas. She and husband Dr. Albert Kihm have resided here 15 years with three children.

Water pressure remains steady as the Seventh Street tower stays full while Highland Park is cleaned, with Mid West Tank Co. scrubbing the interior and a two week return to operation. Senate Finance Committee approved Nixon nominee George P. Shultz as Treasury secretary.
Neosho County reports nearly 1000 voters registered in a two week drive led by County Clerk Wayne Gibson Jr. Registrations focused on rural towns tallying by location with St. Paul at 300 and Tioga township north hall at 112. Deadline for the August primary is July 11, and 18 to 20 year olds may vote starting this year.
An intercepted note to Cha expresses cautious optimism about the election. It notes hope persists as long as voters outnumber candidates, reflecting campaign tensions and public participation concerns.
Jim Babcock of Chanute described KU demonstrations sparked by Nixon's Vietnam bombing moves and Spock speech. He noted 300 to over 1,000 attendees, calls for an all school strike, and a sit in at Chancellor Chalmers offices in Strong Hall with no damage reported.

Chanute Municipal Swimming Pool will open at 1 30 p.m. Saturday weather permitting with Keith and Norma Maring continuing as lease operators for the 16th straight year. The pool underwent a third renovation phase including sandblasting caulking and painting turning the shell from green to white and expanding its appearance.
Harold D. Downey Jr. of Shawnee Oklahoma pleaded guilty to imparting false information about a bomb after joking about a bomb at Will Rogers World Airport. He received a 500 dollar fine, six month suspended sentence, and one year probation.
A three judge federal panel overturned an ICC order that had allowed railroads to collect a charge for setting off grain cars for inspection on sidings. The prior ICC rule let railroads bill the first in transit inspection stop at about one half to one cent per bushel, included in line haul previously.
West German authorities pressed an intensive search for terrorists who bombed the U.S. Army European headquarters in Heidelberg, killing three Americans and wounding five. Investigators had no clues. Interior Minister pointed to the Baader Meinhof Gang and the Red Army Faction claiming responsibility for the May 11 attack in Frankfurt.
Five women were killed in a string of blasts at the Ingram Industries ammunition plant near Kiln Mississippi. A survivor called the scene a nightmare Fourth of July as officials said they did not know what triggered the Wednesday explosion.

North Vietnamese sappers backed by tanks attacked Kontum today. By dusk all sappers had been killed driven out or withdrawn according to the South Vietnamese military. U.S. sources said some sections of the air strip remained under sapper control.
Space probe Pioneer 10, a cereal bowl shaped craft bound for Jupiter, leaves Mars orbit to enter the outer solar system. It must traverse the asteroid belt and endure hazards as it heads toward Jupiter in December 1973 for radiation measurements and planetary study.
