Honeymoon Over For Meter Maids In New York
New York meter maids faced harassment from civilians and some police as anger over their duties grew. Incidents included an assault complaint by Hannah Clemons after a patrolman tore her summons book, and a separate case where a driver was accused of beating a meter maid but the charge was dismissed. A wildcat strike followed, prompting Traffic Commissioner Barnes to suggest replacing some meters with police. Negotiations produced a tentative area-based assignment plan, though a city-wide budget was rejected and some women planned to continue not reporting for work.
