Chief Lige Matlock recounted a case where a youth released from reform school repaid $12 to $13 after admitting participation in a forged check scheme. The youth, not a local, had learned his partner had not yet been released, and Matlock arranged for restitution.
Police report Wayne Moerer of 602 North Highland injured his back yesterday while leaping to avoid a car that skidded to a stop near him. Officers responded at 6 15 p m and an ambulance took him to Neosho Memorial Hospital for examination.
Lawrence AP reports Police Chief John C. Hazelet will become safety advisor for the International Cooperation Administration in Seoul Korea resigning as police chief effective June 26 City Manager Harold Horn named Lt Bill Cod to succeed him Hazelet previously served in Seoul on a similar assignment in 1957 while on leave.
Kensington Palace announced Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones expect their first baby in the fall. The child would be fifth in line to the throne, and Maj. John Griffin said the couple are delighted.

The Lions Club will sponsor a centennial parade on June 14 for school children in grades 1 through 6. Vehicles of any type and centennial entries are welcome with wagons buggies and homemade conveyances eligible. Three divisions per group offer prizes of 3 2 and 1 dollars, plus an overall $2 prize for the most unusual pet. Entries assemble at Royster Junior High by 3 30 p.m. and the parade starts at 4.

Armstrong a 21 year old inmate and the first escapee from the Sedgwick County courthouse jail Armstrong slipped down a rope of mattress covers and dropped 24 feet into a flower bed before surrendering at a west Wichita house Armstrong from Circleville Kan was serving 30 days for a bad check as a trusted inmate.

Fire destroyed two barns and two granaries on the Earl White farm, three miles northeast of here, in about 30 minutes after an observed 2:30 p.m. start from wiring. Neighbors aided, saving seed corn and tools. losses included 200 bushels of corn, 20 of maize, 300 bales of hay, and an old feed grinder. No livestock were lost. six kittens were rescued from the blaze. The Whites will rebuild. buildings were insured.
The Chamber of Commerce planning a 2:30 p.m. meeting at the Tioga to discuss a centennial promotion and the SeKan-O-Rama program. In Jackson Mississippi the 27 Freedom Riders declined NAACP bail offers of 1000 dollars each after arriving from Montgomery Alabama. Governor Barnett said Mississippi is peaceful and warned riders to stay out or proceed without stopping. Negro leaders vowed to intensify efforts to end bus segregation despite arrests and Kennedy cooling off plea.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the consumer price index steady at 127.4 in April, with gains in used cars, health insurance, and other items offset by declines in gasoline, women’s clothing, mortgages, and new cars. May and June projections foresee little change though a rise in June or July is possible.
Chanute High School announces the Jim McCune Memorial Scholarship establishing a one year $75 award for Chanute Junior College. First recipient next year is Gus Carpenter, a 1961 graduate. Funding comes from the senior class and past events, with eligibility for Chanute High School graduates based on scholarship and need.

Wilton B. Roth 52 of Boise Idaho arraigned in Johnson County District Court on bigamy and fraud charges. He allegedly married a Roeland Park woman in December while already wed to two others and obtained 300 dollars under false pretenses. Roth has a wife and five children in Boise and a wife and three children in Los Angeles.
Pittsburgh AP report says Patrolman Luther Montgomery testified in Allegheny County Criminal Court that he saw his stepson William and another boy in a drug store when it was robbed of $60 last April 18. The stepson received a 2 to 4 year sentence. the other boy was acquitted for lack of evidence.
George Lincoln Rockwell leader of the American Nazi party and nine followers were arrested by New Orleans police Wednesday night during a picket of the Exodus film. Rockwell vowed they would remain jailed until cleared on all charges and accused police of pressuring higher authorities. He claimed bail was unavailable and threatened a lawsuit for false arrest.
Senators debated Kennedy’s $2.55 billion public school aid bill and a resolution praising marshals sent to Alabama to curb race riots. Majority Leader Mansfield said the Senate would stay in session to reach a vote, while several critics planned speeches against the measure.
