Soviets Free Yanks After C47 Down in East Germany

U S Air Force reported Soviet authorities freed the C47 with nine Americans aboard after it strayed into East Germany. The Soviet high command protested the flight, stating East Germany frontier protection justification, while U S officials arranged for a meeting to decide if the plane can fly out or if evacuation is needed.

Senate group probes U S spy plane incident details

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to launch a full bipartisan inquiry into the spy plane incident and summit collapse. Testimony will begin Friday with Secretary of State Herter, with closed sessions and censored transcripts released later. The panel plans to question CIA chief Dulles and Defense Secretary Gates, plus possibly Hagerty and other officials as needed.

Local Artists Exhibit Paintings and Sculpture at Johnson Studio

Two young local artists Pat Cathers and John Freeman plan a gallery display at Johnson Studio starting Saturday. They will show local scenery paintings in realistic and abstract styles and mahogany sculptures. Both plan to attend an art school next year. A bank deposit bag containing cash and checks was found by Jim Taylor of the telephone company and returned to Cha nute Animal Clinic after the bag was spotted at Main and Lincoln.

Partly cloudy and warm conditions persist across Kansas with a few isolated thunderstorms possible today tonight and Wednesday. Temperatures will stay warm with 60s at night and highs near 90 by Wednesday. Garden City and Dodge City reported traces of precipitation and reports of thundershowers.

JoAnn Rodgers will play the processional and recessional. Paul Parsons presents class to Floyd Potter for certificates.

Morley Elected County Head of Red Cross

Mahlon Morley was elected chairman of the Neosho County Red Cross for the coming year at the annual meeting. Senseney and all new officers are from Chanute, with Dr. R. G. Louden as vice chairman and Mrs. Morris Pack as secretary. Directors named include Mrs. Alvin Burton and Mrs. Pack. Blood drive set for June 27 at First Methodist church with a 160 pint quota. Fund drive total to date $6,326.43 toward a $9,884 goal to sustain county Red Cross services.

Morehead Names Former Chief as County Juvenile Officer

Probate Judge John Hemphill announces Tom Morehead, former Royster Junior High faculty member and ex police chief, will become county juvenile officer effective June 1. He succeeds Kenneth Wilson who leaves Chanute for a school guidance post. Morehead has 14 years in the police force, eight as chief, and has worked as a salesman since May 1959. the post is part time and he will keep his sales job.

End of Term In Chanute Schools Spotlights Commencement

Chanute schools wrap up classwork with only commencement exercises and grade-card pickups left before summer break. Senior High underclassmen and Junior College face final exams today, with final grades due Thursday morning and graduation Thursday night. Royster Junior High concludes classes tomorrow noon, with ninth grade promotion exercises tomorrow afternoon and grade cards Thursday morning. St Patrick's Grade and Junior High finish today, with an all school picnic tomorrow and 8 am Thursday graduation. Grade cards arrive Friday as five public grade schools end afternoon classes tomorrow. Fifty five Senior High students begin two summer courses starting June 1 taught by Jerry Steele and H A Wolgast for credit, meeting 8 to 12 daily for 4 1/2 weeks. Additional summer offerings in Junior English geometry and Shakespeare were not fully enrolled.

Spy in the Sky Rocket Launched

United States launches an experimental Midas satellite atop an Atlas Agena rocket from Cape Canaveral to detect ballistic missile launches. The 5,000 pound satellite aims for a 150 to 200 mile orbit with infrared sensors and swift警警警 alert to shelters.

Tornadoes Hit Carnegie and Ft Sill Areas in Oklahoma

A Carnegie resident was slightly injured when a board struck her as tornadoes and high winds swept southwest Oklahoma. A peanut factory building was blown onto Highway 9 at Carnegie and three houses damaged. At Ft Sill a funnel damaged a post exchange building and uprooted trees.

The Chamber of Commerce directors voted to proceed with a United Fund program and ranked priorities for work. Joseph G. Lewis chaired the study and planning group as 20 participants weighed campaign questions and a postcard poll showing 39 favoring a United Fund, 3 against.

Private Detective Killed in Wichita Plane Crash

Roy Edward Hancock, 45, operator of a Wichita private detective agency, died when his light plane crashed near Maize near Wichita. The aircraft struck at a 45 degree angle three quarters of a mile from the field. Hancock owned H and H Brokerage Co and Crest Security Bureau and left a widow two sons his mother two brothers and three sisters.
