President Carter signed a sweeping tax cut bill that lowers withholding and simplifies forms affecting about 50 million standard deduction users. The measure adds 19.5 billion in new cuts for individuals and businesses, extends 14.2 billion in current cuts, and includes a new jobs credit for employers hiring above set baselines.
North west Kansas saw golf ball to two inch hail Friday with rain that watered crops but damaged wheat fields, roofs, and windows. Farmers near Atwood and Bird City reported extensive losses while authorities considered a snow plow to clear highways around Levant due to the unusual late May storm.
U N Ambassador Andrew Young spent 31 hours in Johannesburg and pledged continued U S pressure for racial changes in white ruled South Africa. He criticized Prime Minister Vorster, praised Carter as Afrikaner, and hinted at possible economic measures including suspending investment.
