Mrs Wortman on Santa Fe Park boat landing observed Sam the German short haired pointer growl and prance as two white ducks approached at speed. The ducks pursued a large water moccasin while the dog trembled to join the chase.
Peace officers from Neosho County met at the Kay Hotel dining room for a discussion on public relations and related matters. H. G. Curl of The Tribune gave a short talk. The next meeting is planned for Erie in June with local and Chanute officers present.
Ten of twenty graduates with associate degrees in education have accepted teaching positions for the 1956-57 term. Nora Knight lists the group including Barbara Barker Wellsville first grade Wilma Brown Lavenburg grades one to four Esther Gemmill Wichita fourth grade LaVeta Heaton first grade Eric Bonnie Jerome grades four five and six Tonoway Margaret Knetz er fifth grade Chanute Wanda Laurie Wichita Marjorie Moran grades five and six Wayside Peggy Pens Urbana rural Shirley Stone Lyman rural Wilson County. Four others expect to sign contracts before school opens next fall and six plan to continue studies at four year colleges.
Five University of Kansas students were jailed and a sixth free on bond after a Tuesday morning raid on the Baker University Alpha Chi Omega house in Baldwin. The incident left robes torn, windows broken, and silverware taken as investigators flagged 41 car license numbers and impounded several vehicles. One student, Robert M. Hershberg, pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace, while Robert Ray Hopkins faced a charge of intent to do bodily harm. four others were charged with malicious destruction of property. A preliminary hearing was set for June 5.
Operating budgets for 1956 57 totaling 30 694 189 have been approved by the Board of Regents for state schools. Salaries increase 3.7 to 6.3 percent account for 1 245 705. New positions and maintenance costs drive the hike while new buildings are excluded.

Kansas reports 136 men will be supplied for the July draft, down from 152 in June and 144 in May.
A dredge towed off Milwaukee sank in 10-foot waves during a gale on Lake Michigan. Of 19 aboard, seven died, two are missing. survivor John Beehme recalled the dredge sinking within a minute. Captain Affleck reported the towline boom snapping and the vessel pitching.
Bids yesterday totaled 2 915 555 for a major 1 8 mile expressway link to the Kansas Turnpike at Kansas City Kas. The seven bridge project includes grading paving seeding and sodding and marks one of the largest bids by the Highway Commission in recent years.
St Patrick’s Junior High will graduate its first ninth grade class with an 8 o clock ceremony at the church. Rev Charles Walsh of St Patrick’s Parsons will give the address and certificates will be presented by Rev Peter J Finnegan. Thirteen students receive certificates and an all school picnic is planned for tomorrow at City Park. Final grade cards will be distributed Friday.

Excavation for the foundation of the junior college senior high music room began yesterday by Berthot Construction Co. The Board of Education awarded the contract April 24 for 28 174 23 funds. The room will measure about 30 by 60 feet and adjoin the northeast entrance. completion is set for September 1.
B. M. Dunham of Chanute has filed for Republican renomination as district judge in Kansas 7th Judicial District, pursuing another term amid local party activity and election considerations.
President Eisenhower said plans for the Anzio Beach landing were considered but not adopted as carried out. He argued the operation was not a failure and kept German troops tied down in Italy, while Truman denied making the reported criticisms about Salerno and Anzio in Naples.
Cooler air moved into Kansas ending an early heat wave and triggering scattered showers. Rain totals reached up to 1.80 inches in some locales while temperatures dropped from 90s to mid 50s overnight. Forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with isolated showers tonight and partly cloudy conditions Thursday with highs in the 80s.

The Army announces an improved Nike B surface-to-air rocket with greater range and altitude, while stating a unit at the White Sands proving ground trains to tow atomic warheads to existing surface-to-surface rockets. Maj. Gen. Wood says the weapon’s warhead radius is astonishing and newsmen were kept from viewing the device. The Army emphasizes tests are engineering and field tests, not disclosure of atomic warheads.
Congress completed action on a compromise farm bill after Senate approval. It drops most objectionable provisions while including a $1.2 billion soil bank program to pay farmers for retiring land, a key Eisenhower demand. Rep Poage calls it the only bill with a chance to become law.
The Elks in cooperation with Chanute merchants announce a children’s fishing derby for June 9 at Elks lake north of town. entrants must be 14 or younger, register at the Sportshop during June 4 to 8, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. prizes go to two boys and two girls for largest and most fish. transportation meet at 9 a.m. at Sportshop. free hot dogs and pop at the lake.
Washington The House defeated by a standing vote an amendment by Rep. George to raise planning funds for Strawn Reservoir in Kansas from 50 000 to 150 000. George said the extra 100 000 would let engineers finish plans and start construction next year. The dam would address urgent water conservation needs in the area.
Gov. Fred Hall announced the 1955 Kansas safety contest winners based on traffic enforcement, public safety, safety education, accident reports, pedestrian safety, and traffic engineering. First place cities included Topeka, Emporia, Pratt, Roeland Park, Ellis, Ford, and Wamego. top counties were Sedgwick, Montgomery, Pawnee, Finney, Woodson, and Comanche.
Mrs. George McDonald 63 of Concordia swatted a bee while driving on U S 40 five miles west of Salina. She lost control, the car crashed in a ditch, and rolled. She suffered a broken ankle and wrist and was taken to a Salina hospital. A road worker helped remove her from the wreck and a bystander later took the purse containing $20 and papers, which vanished after she was loaded into an ambulance.
Baker University president since 1936 Dr. Nelson Paxson Horn announced his retirement citing illness and physician advice. The end date requested is October. His tenure included a major building program with the Merton S. Rice auditorium nearing completion and a girls dormitory planned. He led church related college efforts and held multiple educational roles.
A blaze at the Good year Tire company building in Council Grove last night caused an estimated $50,000 in damage. The McGraw tire shop, housed in a one story brick building, was a total loss. Water and heat damage affected the Baptist church, the Kansas Power & Light Co. building and several nearby shops. Fire units from Herington Swight Flint Hills Strong City and Lyons No. 1 rural district aided Council Grove. The origin was undetermined and the fire was under control about an hour and a half after starting at 7:45 PM.
Gov Fred Hall asked Secretary Benson for immediate review of Hodgeman County drought relief. He warned drought conditions are worsening with thousands of acres of wheat abandoned and cattle disposed of as the weather and crop bulletin stresses a serious moisture shortage in the western half of Kansas.
Abby L. Marlatt of Kansas State College has been named director of the University of Kentucky School of Home Economics in Lexington, effective September 1. Marlatt chairs foods and nutrition at KSC and will lead UK programs in domestic science and family studies.
