The 1962 Chanute High School graduating class decided not to hold this year’s Senior Assembly after a meeting with school officials. The annual event features spoofs on graduates faculty and others, with this year’s Hell in 2062 theme drawing officials’ caution.
Kansas Democrat leaders concerted drive to contest the U S Senate includes Harry Wiles and former Gov George Docking as potential candidates. Filing ends June 20 with names like J Floyd Breeding William S Robinson Lud Strnad and Frank Theis in the mix and ongoing jockeying for the two seats.
Three Chanute youths Farrel Colston Burl Herndon and Bob Rice pleaded guilty in city court to petty larceny charges. Colston and Rice were fined 25 dollars plus 8.80 costs with one week to pay. Herndon paid 25 dollars on two counts plus 8.80 costs totaling 58.80 with 10 dollars weekly payments. The trio were linked to thefts of gasoline hand tools fishing gear and a radio tied to arrests of Dallas Roles who faces district court for burglary and larceny. Tools fishing gear and the radio were recovered.
The Weather Bureau issued a tornado forecast for eastern Kansas and western and northern Missouri. Severe thunderstorms with a tornado or two, large hail and damaging winds were expected within 60 miles of a line from Chanute to Kirksville from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST today.
State Sen. Wade A. Myers of Emporia filed today as a Democratic candidate for Congress in Kansas 5th District. He paid a 225 dollar filing fee and is the first candidate from either party to file. A campaign kickoff dinner is set for Saturday in Pittsburg. Myers previously served as Lyon County probate and juvenile judge before his legislative election.
A Lola city court hearing for Larry Stevenson, 18, was continued to next Monday at 3 30 p m. He was released on 25 bond. The charge stems from a complaint by Glen and Mrs Niver of 321 S Larson alleging Stevenson forced entry and assaulted the family last Friday night.
The 1961-62 Chanute term ends with senior and junior college finals from Thursday to Monday. Exam schedules, picnics at Highland Park and City Park, yearbook distribution, and a Junior-Senior Prom with Roman Paradise theme mark the week. Baccalaureate is Sunday night. Prom is Saturday night with Bill Strout’s Emporia band.
Today’s forecast calls for generally fair, warm and windy conditions with a cool front moving through Kansas bringing scattered showers and cooler temperatures by late tonight and Wednesday. Highs near 80 to 85, tonight lows 65 to 70. Topeka readings show 1 p.m. humidity and a barometer at 29.60 inches. Local events include a kindergarten circus by East Murray Hill, a Lincoln School sixth grade musical talent program, and an awards assembly at Royster Junior High Friday morning. Storm activity limited to a 60 mile band across several counties with hail and strong winds reported.
A merchants meeting approved a Christmas attraction and street decoration plan led by a committee of Bob Smalley, Bob Fisher, and M. J. Martin. They rejected buying used Amarillo decorations and set forthcoming events including a July 14 sidewalk bazaar and a circus sales promotion to be run by individual merchants. A three session sales clinic by Burton E. Persson may start with 25 enrollments at 3.50 each. Joe Melnyk led the session in Elon Randle's absence.
Nineteen high school students were jailed overnight in Butler County after a gang fight at a pre graduation party by the Whitewater River near Augusta. Fourteen youths’ beer, a knife, an axe, boards and a tire iron were found. arraigned in county court on disturbing the peace by fighting.
An American four engine Navy transport on a secret mission exploded and crashed near Markt Schwaben Bavaria killing all 27 aboard. Fire brigades controlled the blaze as witnesses recalled a loud explosion and flashing flames seen from miles away. Authorities said there were no survivors among the 27.
Police filed several theft reports yesterday detailing losses. Ralph Boaz reported 25 gallons of gasoline and 5 to 10 gallons of oil with a grease gun from a Stark area farm. George Woosley reported about 22 gallons of gasoline stolen from a tractor in the river bottom northeast of Chanute across three incidents. Mrs. Jim Ellis reported a film projector missing from 1108 W. 7th within two weeks, valued at 59 dollars. Ira Dutton reported two lawn chairs stolen from a garage at 228 E. 11th.
Two wild elephants attacked Saokonia in East Pakistan killing 12 and injuring 30, AP reports. The tragedy highlights the danger posed by wildlife in rural areas.
An AP report from Oakland California notes a light earthquake Monday night shook dishes but caused no reported damage in the city.
Kansas traffic death log shows 0 fatalities in the 24 hours to 9 am Tuesday. The May total stands at 37 for 1962, with 192 for the year to date. Comparable figures for 1961 were 201 for the period.
A 1962 Tempest owned by Mary S. Demler of Erie was damaged when struck by a vehicle driven by Terry L. Kiser, 14, also of Erie, during last night’s graduation exercises. The underage driver surrendered his license for 30 days.
The American Medical Association denounced the Kennedy backed King Anderson medical care plan as a cruel hoax that would strip private doctors and hospitals of independence. AMA speakers warned the proposal would undermine private insurance and worsen patient care while urging viewers to consult their own doctors. The plan would finance aid through a Social Security tax rise and provide coverage for Social Security recipients.
President Kennedy denounced physicians as opposing elderly health care while AMA leaders branded the plan a cruel hoax. Senate and House Democrats predicted action this session, but Florida Senator Smathers doubted enactment this year.
City Manager R. J. Hayes, hospitalized in New York City, was reported improved today and plans to resume travel to Cha nute. He and Mrs. Hayes were scheduled to arrive in Kansas City by plane at 7 30 tonight.
A 1960 Corvair driven by Lloyd White 20 of Buffalo R 1 went off highway K39 two miles west of here last night but was not badly damaged. White was not injured. Undersheriff Lester Marts said the left rear axle broke causing the loss of control. The car belonged to Ralph Porter of Fredonia.

A speeding fire truck in Albuquerque smelled smoke a mile from its destination as the vehicle caught fire. The driver extinguished the engine fire while a second truck put out the brush fire.
