County officials said a liquor item listed at 54 percent of its amount came from an error at a sheriff's sale of confiscated booze. A case was short and refunds were issued from the general fund after checks verified. Proceeds from two sales largely funded the school fund.
Hearings in Erie for two drivers charged with driving while intoxicated were held yesterday in the justice of the peace court. Ira Hizey of Galesburg received 90 days in county jail and a fine plus costs. Lloyd Roberts of Erie was fined 100 dollars and costs. Hizey was cited by the highway patrol and Roberts by Erie constable Floyd Hayes.
Bids totaling 233 325 for 42.6 miles of highway resurfacing across Neosho Wilson Woodson and Allen counties were approved as part of 797 700 in total bids. Freete Construction Co of Pittsburg had the low bids on multiple projects and a major 64 mile grading and box bridge job on K39 near Fredonia was bid at 141 835.
An airborne B47 landed at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina Kansas after bursting its two front tires, skidding and shearing off two engines. All three crewmen aboard escaped injury in the incident described as a Lee Wasser for insurance.
State Revenue Director J E Kirchner announces a new schedule for collecting sales tax on small purchases starting at 17 cents effective June 1. Brackets range from one cent on 17 to 56 cents to four cents on 1.37 to 1.79 dollars with larger purchases unchanged. The change aims to help merchants break even on tax collections.

Charles Dean aged 17 drowned while swimming with Floyd Yeager 17 near his Wyandotte County home. Dean allegedly cramped and disappeared underwater as firemen recovered his body.
Kansas State Accident Records reports 3 traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Today. To date in 1959 fatalities total 174, compared with 166 for the comparable period in 1958.
Nine year old Chris Palmer died after darting in front of a car driven by Jack Pittman in El Dorado Kansas. Witnesses described the incident as a residential street accident. The boy’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Palmer.
The Small Business Administration declared Buchanan County a disaster area after Monday night's flash flood in St. Joseph Missouri. Emergency loans will be available to victims.
In Geneva, U S Secretary of State Herter sharply rebuked Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko for charging NATO with aggression. He urged halting accusations that could raise tensions at the Big Four talks as Western diplomats anticipated private discussions at a dinner with Gromyko, Lloyd, and Couve de Murville.
Victor Lamke, longtime Edmiston Department Store manager, resigns to become display manager of J. C. Penney in Colorado Springs. He will start May 25 and move with his wife and four sons, leaving Edmiston after a century of service in Nevada, Missouri, Independence and Chanute. Kim Kinzer fills in as interim manager, with regional support until the new manager arrives.
A severe rain and windstorm swept Topeka and surrounding Kansas areas causing injuries and extensive property damage. Fifteen people required hospital care while tornado alerts were issued across eastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri.
A powerful windstorm lashed Galveston and surrounding areas causing extensive damage. Two fishermen near Galveston remained missing, feared drowned, as winds reached hurricane force. Debris toppled structures, a tanker ran aground, and power outages affected Port Bolivar and Carrizo Springs.
Unofficial sources say the Air Force plans to launch four mice aboard a Discoverer III from Vandenberg for spaceflight and recovery near Hawaii. Western Aviation notes the mice will be payload passengers, with recovery attempts over the Pacific. prior Discoverer II failed to recover its capsule after northbound arctic passes.
Fifty four eighth grade graduates from Neosho County's rural schools will receive diplomas at Chanute High School auditorium at 2 30 Saturday afternoon. Superintendent Nelle H Stevens announced Dr Clifton B Huff of Emporia State College will deliver the commencement address.
The Weather Bureau issued a severe thunderstorm forecast for parts of northeastern Oklahoma extreme southeastern Kansas extreme northwestern Arkansas and southwestern Missouri. Thunderstorms developing in northeastern Oklahoma are expected to move into Missouri and Arkansas this afternoon with some storms likely severe bringing large hail and damaging gusts between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CST along a line from 50 miles southwest of Tulsa to 30 miles northeast of Springfield.
State Senator Walter McVey of Independence indicated he is seriously considering seeking the GOP nomination for Congress in Kansas's Third District in 1960. Myron V. George of Altamont will not seek a 1960 comeback, leaving McVey and others as potential candidates amid a Third District GOP workshop planned in the area.
A Chanute delegation led by Ed F. Peterson and Robert N. Allen travels to Parsons for a 3rd district Republican workshop. The event opens with lunch at the Parsonian Hotel and is the fifth in a Kansas series on party organizational work, with state leaders including Sam Mellinger and Tony Griffith in attendance.
