President Nixon announced that the United States and the Soviet Union will work this year toward an agreement on limiting antiballistic missiles and offensive nuclear weapons. He called it a major step to break the stalemate in SALT talks, with Moscow issuing a parallel statement.
City Planning Commission voted to recommend changing two western areas from B-1 to B-2 zoning. The West Cherry Street industrial park and the Beech Street Burris Addition would shift to reflect their light industrial makeup. Area firms include ILC Products, Kustom Electronics, H. K. Fox notes federal funds ended in 1971 and a $71,000 request failed. a $20,000 revolving fund was created but rejected by librarians.
Seattle AP report says Virgil F. Smith, 61, was charged with two counts of petty larceny after surveillance footage showed him taking two sips from a bottle of whiskey in a liquor board warehouse on May 10. Board officials reviewed the videotape and notified authorities.
Soviet sources report nine Jews on trial in Leningrad for hijack plotting were convicted and sentenced to labor camp terms. Official accounts cite anti-Soviet slander or complicity in an abortive hijack attempt, with Gilya Butman, 38, receiving 10 years in a strict regime camp for treasonous planning of the June 15, 1970 hijack attempt.
Russell County District Judges Frederick Woleslager and Herbert Rohleder disqualified themselves from a state bid to temporarily suspend Russell County Attorney Mike Holland. The judges announced the recusal in a meeting with Holland and Kansas Attorney General officials and plan to inform the judicial administrator to assign another judge.
Navy Captain James A. Lovell Jr., Apollo 13 commander and veteran of four space missions, leaves the astronaut corps to become deputy director for science and applications at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. He holds the world record for time in space and has logged over 29 days in orbit.
American poet Ogden Nash died at Johns Hopkins Hospital at age 68 after kidney failure and a May 9 stroke. He had long been regarded as America�s master of doggerel and died Wednesday while under treatment.
Moscow reports an unmanned Soviet Mars 2 mission launched Wednesday night on a 300 million mile voyage to Mars. Tass says the five ton automatic interplanetary station expects to reach the planet by November, with no word on a soft landing plan.
