Bypass construction eyed for Chanute next spring

DOT official Dwight Blackwood says U.S. 169 bypass around Chanute could begin next spring if funding and approvals align. FAA review cited but not expected to block work. 27 miles planned as super two with future four lane expansion. $51.39 million earmarked for the project from 1977 78 funds.

Congressional report backs administration insurance plan

A GAO study finds merit in a plan to force farmers to fund most of their own weather disaster insurance. It notes two existing USDA programs, a 1973 disaster subsidy for wheat, feed grains and cotton, and an older crop insurance program covering over 20 crops, with caveats to be addressed by amendments.

School Board Sets Special Meeting on Teacher Contracts

A special meeting of school board members is scheduled at 6 30 p m Thursday at the Fisher Administration Building to finalize the terms of the 1976 77 teacher negotiations. The board will vote on adopting the salary and supplemental salary schedules and fringe benefits for certified personnel.

Kansas forms housing task force to guide future needs

Gov. Robert Bennett announced a housing task force to study rehabilitation construction and financing for Kansas. The group will develop a statewide housing program under the Kansas Department of Economic Development and report within a year, guiding private sector-led solutions. Members include leaders from Topeka Great Bend Manhattan McPherson Parsons and other cities.

City Grants Purchase Option For Highland Park Site

The City Commission granted Criste Corporation of Parker Colorado a non exclusive option to buy city property at Highland Park for 36000 dollars after a 35250 dollar appraisal. HUD funding for a privately owned elderly high rise was sought but the housing authority failed to file that application this year. John Schultz a former commissioner and Criste agent noted the site east of the tennis courts is underused and well suited for the project.

Southwestern Bell seeks 20 cent directory aid charge in Kansas

Southwestern Bell asks the Kansas Corporation Commission to allow a 20 cent per call directory assistance fee after three calls monthly within 60 days of a favorable ruling. The plan aims to save about 2.9 million annually and would trim a 27.5 million general rate increase request.
