Tornado Hits Four Altoona Area Farms Causing Major Damage
A small tornado struck four farmsteads near Altoona causing extensive outbuilding destruction with no injuries. At the Jim Brown place four miles south and two miles west, barns and a chicken house were destroyed while about 300 Wingate chickens were killed. Mrs. Fay George sheltered in a roadside ditch as buildings collapsed and trees were uprooted. the continuing storm damaged two brooderhouses, a hen house, a workshop, granaries, and several pieces of machinery. Nearby Wingate and George farms reported destroyed barns, sheds, and equipment including a combine and tractor tire. Electricity failed around 5 pm. No homes were seriously damaged.

One of the heaviest rains since 1951 drenched Kansas with over five inches in parts, flooding the Little Arkansas and Walnut rivers. An explosion and fire last night destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs Mike Papa in Kansas City Kas. The couple crawled through a window with only minor cuts. Papa aged 69 and his wife 65 survived. the blast likely resulted from a gas buildup in the basement.
