A stone marker marking the Site of Neosho Mission the first Kansas school from 1824 sits toppled near the Neosho River Shaw. Erected by the Schools of Chanute in 1936 the inscription notes the site’s historic role.

A crash Friday on K39 7.2 miles east killed two people when a semi loaded with crude oil struck a stopped Ford. Dwaine L. Whitworth 26 of Chanute was treated and released. Charles S. Wood 65 Chanute was identified. a second victim believed to be Madaline M. Wood 50 remained unnamed due to fire damage.
A rear collision between a 1968 International truck and a car near a farm pond west of Ke$ leaves two occupants dead. Whitworth escaped through a rear window with help from bystanders as fire erupts and oil spills into Big Creek. Time of crash set at 4 10 p.m. Authorities note truck contact with the tanker and farm activity prior to the wreck.
