City Manager R J Hayes says no further info on a possible link between tree spraying for Dutch elm disease and losses of birds and goldfish. He notes three reports of leaves dropping on hedges in sprayed areas and urges immediate washing of flowers and shrubs. Fishing ponds can be protected by covering.
A Kansas weather bulletin notes expected showers statewide through Tuesday after heavy rains in the western and northern regions. Hail damage reported at Frankfort and a tornado sighting near Elkhart-Rolla are mentioned, with rainfall totals from multiple towns and highs ranging from 66 to 81 degrees across the state.
W N Gardner 1014 W 3rd underwent emergency surgery Saturday at the University of Kansas Medical Center for repair of a ruptured blood vessel. Last report Sunday morning said the operation was successful as Gardner fell ill while preparing Camp Wilderness near Independence. He received blood transfusion in Independence before transfer.
The highway patrol arrested Roy Hawes, 62 E. Main, at Santa Fe and Hickory about 5 p.m. Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and transporting an open bottle. He posted $150 bond and was released, with a hearing set for 4 p.m. Thursday in city court. Also arrested was Glen D. Farrow, 1124 N. Forest, on intoxication charges. He posted $15 bond.
Chanute Senior High Drum and Bugle Corps bid tearful goodbyes to 13 graduates and instructor after 11 years. Banquet in Tioga Hotel followed by a dance. new leaders named for 1960-61 and retiree Helen Anderson receives a gift as she moves to the Girl Scouts.
FBI agents and Frisco Railroad police seek who dumped sulfuric acid on freight cars in the Frisco yards at Tulsa Oklahoma. Over 150 autos were damaged with more than 90 severely affected as cars on upper tiers suffered the worst harm. Cars had departed St. Louis for Tulsa and Dallas and the amount used was substantial.
David Worchester, 65, of Manhattan, is missing after a boat overturned on the Kaw River east of Manhattan Saturday night. He fished with two companions, Tony Eckart of Manhattan and Walden Holland of Liberal, who swam to safety after the boat capsized as they started the motor in the strong current.
The Associated Press reports a New York hint that Rockefeller may be considered for the presidency at the Republican convention in Chicago. VP Nixon is seen as likely GOP nominee and Kennedy favored to lead Democrats. Rockefeller declines attending the convention to avoid misreadings about a second-place bid.
Paris AP report says the summit collapsed in its first session as the Soviet Union and the United States accused each other of sabotaging talks. Khrushchev pressed for a six month delay and cancelled Eisenhower's invitation, while Eisenhower rejected renewed spy flights and urged private talks to salvage the conference.
Senate leaders accuse Khrushchev of deliberately breaking the Paris summit over the U2 incident. Johnson and others call the move a tactic to derail talks while Eisenhower proposes United Nations aerial surveillance to ease global tensions. Khrushchev warns against negotiations and a six to eight month suspension looms as leaders meet in Paris.
The Tribune runs a two week free ad program for high school and junior college students. Ads run four days unless employment occurs, limited to 24 words with name age and address, submitted in person or by letter.
A meeting on Chanute city recreation proposals is set for tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Don Jolly of Parsons will explain how the program operates and discuss costs under a plan funded by a one mill tax levy raising about $12 000 annually.
The Kansas Board of Health reported 503 cancer cases in March, up from 440 in March 1959. New tuberculosis cases fell to 21 from 37, gonorrhea rose to 189 from 135, and syphilis declined from 197 to 105.
Three Kansans died in weekend crashes. Wayne Blythe 15 of Kansas City Kansas died when the car he rode in overturned near the K10 K7 junction north of Olathe early Sunday. Robert Schlicht 20 of Kansas City Kansas died in a two car crash in Wyandotte County early Sunday. Mrs Grace Reichert 63 of McPherson died in a two car collision on U S 81 south of Newton Sunday afternoon. Albert Craddock 39 of Mount Vernon Texas died Saturday night in an Emporia hospital after injuries from a May 6 collision that killed Robert Meyers of Emporia.
A tornado struck the George Stevens farm 13 miles southwest of Clay Center at 12:50 a.m. damaging a cattle feeding shed uprooting fruit trees and tearing down a transformer. Power was knocked out for the rest of the night. Stevens is principal of the Clay Lee Wasser for Insurance. Ph. 119 County Community High School at Clay Center.
City officials, the Chamber of Commerce and local firms urge observance of Clean Up Paint Up Fix Up Week through Saturday. Fire hazards and property appearance are focus with Gov Docking proclaiming it statewide for better health and a fire safe community.
Two vandalism incidents with BB guns were reported today. In Chanute, 17 windows were broken at a rural school building about a mile south and three fourths mile east of town, with $75 damage. A second report noted windshield holes in a car parked at Grant Avenue Baptist Church near Rural.
A flash fire damaged paint wiring and appliances at the Robert Greve home 706 S. Lafayette about 3 50 p m Saturday. Firemen said fumes from termite spray Greve used were ignited when a light bulb broke. Greve's hair was singed but she had no serious burns.
