Injury to Horse Sparks Boom in Trailer Industry
Bill Blair, Neosho County Agricultural Agent, turned a horse injury into a growing horse trailer business. Five workers produce economy, standard walk through, and luxe walk through models for two and four horse sizes, plus a livestock trailer. In six weeks this year they made 22 trailers, now four weekly. Blair, a farmer and horse breeder, expanded from cattle and pleasure horses to a full time trailer enterprise, with first orders shipped to Salt Lake City and rapid deliveries driving demand.

Brush Removal Techniques For Pasture Improvement
Neosho County farm agent explains that brush in hedges, buckbrush, sumac, jack oak and other scrub reduces pasture value. Removal via cutting and stump treatment with 245-T diesel mix, or basil trunk treatment, followed by bulldozing later, prevents sprouts. May through June is ideal for killing buckbrush and sumac. spraying 24D at 1-3-2-3 lb per acre helps control weeds. After clearing, reseed with native or tame cool or warm season grasses for better grazing.
Wheat plan faces voting threshold for penalties and quotas
The 1964 wheat plan ties land-use penalties to meeting three program provisions. If more than one third of growers reject it, no quotas, no marketing quota penalties, and price support cut to 50 percent for those under their acreage allotments. Past votes have never rejected wheat marketing quotas.
Recreational Project Near Erie Plans Approved
Plans for one of three cropland conversion projects in Kansas are set near Erie. Robert B. Smith will convert about 15 acres to grass and recreation, including a five acre pond for fishing and waterfowl hunting and adjacent upland game hunting. The project aims to unite town and country while conserving soil and water, with cost shares for dam work and seeding. About 100 acres will be converted to cool season grass and brush, and shrub leaves will be sprayed in May and June to aid pasture recovery after the first year.
