Mrs Frances Schlereth of Munhall wins $270 in a civil case after a Duquesne Light crossbar extended 6 inches over her property line. A judge ordered the removal of the overhang and awarded 45 dollars per inch for the six inches.
Neosho County welcomes a new industry linking Chanute and Erie firms to Lawlor Industries of Addison Illinois. Lawlor makes floor scrubbing and polishing machines with models from 30 to 72 inches powered by gasoline or battery, used by major companies nationwide. An assembly line in Erie will produce up to three units per week, with local workers Alfred Heady Lewis Heady and Bill Noakes directing. The Erie plant, near Katy depot, showcased the machine at a Friday open house and at the Spring Industrial Show. Prosser Tire & Plastic Co. supplies fiberglass covers and tanks for recreational vehicles and other fiberglass items for Lawlor. The Prosser company employs five workers and started in 1967 with boat hulls and camper shower pans.
At Lincoln University a peaceful sit in ended when Attorney General Danforth approached with a restraining order. Demonstrators in the student union had been occupying the building since Friday with a 400 plus turnout including a Missouri–Columbia delegation.
Chanute city commission approves protest letter to the Interstate Commerce Commission and requests a public hearing on the proposed discontinuation of Santa Fe passenger trains 211 and 212 between Kansas City and Tulsa. Chamber of Commerce leaders also plan to push ICC action before June 1 to preserve service.
Weather update for Topeka reports partly cloudy skies and mild conditions. Thunderstorms are expected tonight and Wednesday with a 50 percent and 25 percent precipitation probability respectively. Highs near 80 and lows around 60.
Two bodies recovered near the blast scene on the Mississippi River at Lagrange Missouri. Three missing include W C Mitchell and Aaron Gene from Memphis Tennessee and Lewis Hagenhoff of Martinsburg Missouri. Fire was extinguished after the barge lodged against the Chicago Burlington & Quincy bridge at Quincy Illinois.
President Nixon asked Congress to authorize a lottery system for the military draft. He proposed 19 year olds be first called but subject to one year of service instead of seven. He said the disruptive impact on lives should be minimized while aiming for an all volunteer force.
Chanute city commissioners establish a five member housing authority to advise the city on future public housing projects. Names to be announced May 26. The body will oversee industrial land purchases, planning for an industrial park, and joint power studies with Coffeyville.
