President Johnson, in a White House broadcast, says Communist China seeks to erode U.S. ability to curb Chinese domination across Asia, not just South Vietnam. He pledges unconditional talks and remains committed to South Vietnam while warning China will fail.
A Memorial building gathering of city officials and advisers reviewed improve ment ideas for the Central Park pavilion. They noted bond funds cannot cover kitchen facilities and prioritized basic work to halt deterioration. A long term plan could follow in the park program. The planning commission also set a June 9 rezoning hearing for two cases.
Moscow reports Lunik 5 hit the moon but did not perform a soft landing as planned. Tass said the 3,250 pound craft landed in the Sea of Clouds at 10:10 p.m. ending its three day flight. the agency noted information gathered aids future soft landing development.
Chanute city approves to issue no-fund warrants up to 6750 dollars to buy a slurry street sealing machine. City Manager R J Hayes said purchase will be made at once though delivery date is not definite. Authority granted by State Board of Tax Appeals.
An intercepted note references red spies allegedly hiding a radio transmitter in an olive of a martini and notes a Soviet failure to bug the moon, framed as a curt, casual correspondence.
Police investigated a break in at parked cars during West Main stock car races. A woman's billfold and possibly dangerous pills were taken from one car. Items were discarded nearby. Two additional cars were pilfered with one owner missing $1.50 and another owner reclaiming items from youths.
Cloudy with showers and thunderstorms over 60 percent of the area tonight and Friday. Warmer tonight, otherwise little change in temperatures Friday. Low near 60, high Friday in the lower 80s. In southwest Kansas rainfall moved in with Liberal reporting about a half inch. moisture-laden clouds were pushed north and east, likely to continue into tonight. Wednesday highs ranged from 81 in Olathe to 88 in Wamego with lows from 52 in Topeka to 61 in Garden City.

NATO foreign ministers flew home a day early after a split over U.S. Viet Nam and Dominican Republic policies was averted. A communique cited grave threats to security in Viet Nam, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia and parts of Africa while reaffirming peoples’ right to peaceful self-government. Rusk pressed for a passage labeling the war a world peace menace, while French opposition sought broader self-determination language.
Greenville case unfolds as Mary Jane Hollingsworth Farrell 19 fights extradition from Miami after allegedly stealing as much as 550000 from her father’s Hollingsworth plant. Her mother Eula Hollingsworth faces charges. Jeffrey Farrell and Theodosia Kuper also linked.
Seven new members were oriented at the Chanute Jaycees meeting at the Orchid Buffet, lifting total membership to 61. New members: Gary Rowles, Jack Haight, Dave Toland, Pack St. Clair, Keith Chartier, Jerry Willis, Tom Works. Officers to be elected May 26.
Hobbs New Mexico AP report: Carol Ratliff will join her parents in the Hobbs High School commencement May 25. Mr and Mrs M A Ratliff graduate with their daughter after night school work. Ratliff quit school as a junior to join the Navy. Mary left school to marry.
Gov William H Avery reappointed four officials to new terms in Topeka. Harry Darby of Kansas City joins the Eisenhower Presidential Library Commission for four years. Royal Cox of Iola becomes director of the State Grain Department for two years. James Bibb and Fred Gulock of Topeka join the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System board for four years.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic death toll for 24 hours ending 9 am Thursday May 15 1965 with 1965 total 203 compared to 205 for the same period in 1964.
