A Tribune reader reports browning tree leaves wilting flowers and a dying bird after Elm disease spray. A cat that preyed on the ill bird fell ill, suggesting a fatal chain reaction from the chemical treatment. City Manager Hayes will inspect the Taylor property for more details.
Washington AP outlines top bills pending in Congress. Foreign Aid authorization totaling 4.026 billion passed both houses and goes to the President, with ongoing hopes to trim further in later appropriations. Space civilian activities authorization set at 970 million, above Eisenhower’s request, awaiting final approval. Payments to States in Lieu of Taxes seeks to restore local revenue lost when federal property is acquired, a measure Republicans criticize as costly.
Washington AP reports Dr. Lloyd C. Miller of USP testified that federal drug inspections are so weak that prescribing medicines without confirming manufacturer reliability is unsafe. Miller heads the revision division of the private standards body, which the government attempts to enforce for drug purity quality and potency.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP The United States attempted to place a giant inflatable balloon satellite into orbit as a reflector for long range radio signals but contact was lost after the second stage burnout. NASA expects a retry before year end with more inflatable spheres and solar power vehicles in development.
Arthur S. Kline vice chairman of the Federal Power Commission testified before House investigators that an off the record visit by lawyer Thomas G. Corcoran did not influence his vote in a 52 million dollar Midwestern Gas Transmission Co pipeline case. He said his fixed return rate was a matter of principle and he did not change his position due to Corcoran's private contact. The FPC left the return rate open in a unanimous decision as Kuykendall echoed similar remarks. Corcoran, once an advisor to Franklin D. Roosevelt, had private talks with Kuykendall Connole and Kline just before the approval to import Canadian gas amid staff recommendations for lower profits.
The Chanute Teachers Association will hold its final meeting of the year Tuesday at 6 30 PM in the Methodist church. Martha Hutton, the association president, announced the event and Dr Ruth Stout of Topeka, immediate past president of the National Education Association, will be the speaker after a dinner.
Kansas traffic death log reports 24 hour period ending 9 am Friday with 1 fatality in 1960 compared to 170 fatalities in the comparable 1959 period.
New York AP report says magician Nazzareno Genovis faces Housing Court on a charge of unlawfully harboring pigeons a nuisance. He must remove all 12 pigeons from his act, promising to eliminate three weekly but without detailing a method.
Forecast calls for increasing cloudiness and warmer conditions tonight, then partly cloudy and warm Saturday. Tonight’s low in the middle 40s, Saturday high around 80 to 85 with a 1 p.m. relative humidity near 30 percent and a falling barometer at 28.80 inches.
AP reports a warming trend will push Kansas highs into the 80s with southerly winds and increasing clouds. Showers are possible by Saturday night. Thursday’s highs ranged from 70 at Concordia Salina and Olathe to 77 at Goodland, with lows from 41 Emporia Wamego to 52 Concordia.
AP reports 66 year old Kansas City grocer Alex Gorsky was killed during a burglary at his store in Kansas City Kansas. Found near the cash register with a crushed skull, a sawed off bat was found nearby. A Negro man was seen in the store shortly before and a customer noted an argument. Cash had been stolen but likely under $25. Gorsky had run the store for 30 years.
Washington AP reports President Eisenhower vetoed a 251 million dollar bill aimed at distressed areas. The Democrat sponsored measure would have created a federal loan and grant program to aid communities with economic problems such as mining towns and abandoned railroad centers.

The Tribune announces a two week summer job ad program for high school and junior college students. Ads run four consecutive days, 24 words max with name age and address, placed in person or by letter by 10 a.m. for same day publication, to connect students with employers seeking summer workers.
A two day stamp collectors convention opens tomorrow at the Tioga Hotel drawing up to 300 visitors from Kansas Oklahoma and Missouri. Robert W. Baughman of Liberal Kansas notes a Pony Express stamp and letter on display tracing the 1861 route via Wells Fargo stages and postmarks. D A Finney leads local arrangements with a Washington Post Office Department exhibit and a branch post office facility on site.
Standard Industries of Tulsa moves equipment for US 169 improvements and resurfacing on South Lincoln and 7th, including asphalt layover from the south city limits to Shaw road. Bid price set at $71,995 with an asphalt plant to be located at 21st Street near the Santa Fe tracks.
Kansas City AP reports a 46 day strike at Fisher Body plant ended with a settlement announced by company officials.
The Soviet air force chief, Chief Air Marshal Vershinin, canceled his planned U.S. visit amid the U2 spy plane incident. The postponement raises questions about President Eisenhower’s own June good will mission and possible Soviet demands to halt American espionage over Russia.
Prince Aly Khan, 48, diplomat and racing aficionado, killed in a head on crash near Paris after an afternoon at Longchamp. Bettina Bodin, his companion, injured. Aly’s chauffeur only slightly hurt. He dies en route to hospital after suffering a fractured skull and other injuries. Karim and Amyn, his two sons, survive. Rita Hayworth expressed shock.
Phil Dryden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dryden of R.3, is named winner of Ottawa University’s citizenship scholarship worth 1200 for four years. He competed across the nation, judged on high school record, references, exam, and need. Twelve winners earned 400 to 1200. Dryden also receives a 200 scholarship from the American Baptist Convention matched by Ottawa University.
The Royster Junior High instrumental music department presents its sixth annual Spring Band Concert at 8 o'clock in the school auditorium. Glenn Peak conducts three school bands with guest Leland Clapson from the high school. Over 200 students perform plus Harold Tarpley directing the Chevaliers for a vocal number and a saxophone quartet and trumpet trio with solos.
Mrs. Angelina Severino, 56, was killed in a freak accident in New York when a trailer detached from a passing vehicle, struck a parked car, and ricocheted onto her lawn during yard work.
Fairfield Grange will hold an 8 p.m. meeting at the school on Monday. A pot luck of refreshments will be served to attendees.
Police investigated two traffic accidents yesterday. At 103 W Main Arthur Daniel and Toronto R 1 and R D Wallace, both 76, backed from a curb and traveled east on Main. Damages cited: Daniel 1951 Pontiac left rear $5, Wallace 1958 Ford right side $150. Wallace suffered a bruised left hand. A second collision at 1st and Lincoln involved Bob Haviland 21 and Mrs Martha Brooks 53. Brooks left turn from Ist to Lincoln and Haviland north on Lincoln. Damages: Haviland 1953 Nash left front $75. Brooks 1949 Lincoln left side $100. Brooks cited for failing to yield right of way. hearing set next Thursday at 4 p.m. A minor collision reported at 15 N Evergreen where milk truck driver Paul Puckett struck a parked 1957 Ford owned by Raymond Markham. minor damage noted.
