Low profits in beef processing despite higher prices
Industry sources in Emporia note beef slaughter and processing yield only about 1 percent profit. IBP operates eight plants across Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota, including Emporia, with a daily Emporia kill of 2,712 cattle. Buyers, a large private communications network, and boxed beef cuts drive costs and sales while live price swings complicate profit calculations.
