US war planes returned to the Hanoi area for the first time in three weeks and bombed storage depots, barracks and training facilities supporting the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam, the U S Command said.
President Nixon met with top aides in the Cabinet Room as U S warplanes bombed Hanoi outskirts. The NSC session followed renewed strikes on storage depots and barracks with no reported U S losses, while Hanoi radio claimed two planes were shot down.
A fire at the Lamplighter building 202 S Evergreen required a firefighter ladder rescue. Barbara Middleton was saved from a second floor apartment and rushed to Neosho Memorial Hospital for observation after smoke and shock. Tom Mitchell’s apartment was a total loss with minor structural damage and smoke in hallways. Firefighters from two trucks contained the blaze with six personnel on scene from 3:15 to 4:50 a.m. The cause preliminarily points to a burning cigarette aiding ignition.
