Cmdr. Alan B. Shepard said the flight made him America's first spaceman will encourage him and teammates to press on with Project Mercury. He described the open flight, surprising smooth lift off, and reported looking through the periscope. he noted no bad moments and acknowledged unforeseen sensations during the Mach 1 trans-senie.
The Tribune honors three winners sharing a $6 prize. Joe McClung reported the fatal explosion of an air tank near Walnut. Mrs. Arthur Carlson contributed a human interest piece on area hunters and a rattlesnake fry. Guy Braden submitted a flash flood rescue story from Leavenworth.

A jury was impaneled at 10:25 a.m. in district court to hear the case of Roy Babcock vs. Bertha Kennedy of Chanute. The 1955 traffic crash on highway K39 near Chanute is cited as the suit's basis with $25,000 sought for injuries and damages. Jurors include Lois Blume Phyle MecGuffey Mrs. Floyd L. West Sr. Robert Crismas Howard Earnest Earl Wible Virginia Burns Ted Kyle Claud Wout Florien Andrews and Thomas Duling.
A kickoff meeting for the centennial queen contest during SeKan-O-Rama will be at 7 45 p m at the Tioga Hotel. All queen candidates managers parents and friends should attend to hear contest rules voting mechanics and prize details. Top prize is a weeklong vacation for the queen and a companion valued at over 1000 dollars with options to travel Fort Lauderdale Florida and Nassau Bahamas or 400 cash.
Erie reports river at 27 to 27.4 feet well above flood stage with le vees breached and several homes evacuated in the south. US 59 stays open. power and water plants operate normally. Nearby Benedict, Humboldt, Altoona and Iola also note rising rivers, road closures and school buses running as flood conditions persist.
Swollen Neosho River crested at 28.40 feet above normal near Chanute causing evacuations of homes and businesses. Rainfall totals reached 1.42 inches today, with forecasts for a further crest and rising water levels along nearby towns and river gauges. Local industries from Chanute Iron and Metal to Disney's Market evacuated as flood plans shifted.
Storms lashed Kansas with tornadoes floods and heavy rain leaving one drowning death. Dick Stevens 52 Wichita was found in flood waters on US 77 near Winfield. Verdigris River rose over levees at Coffeyville while trains and roads faced washouts and widespread flooding.
A state highway spokesman said at 11 am today that all immediate area roads are open. Water covered US 169 north of town yesterday afternoon and last night but traffic resumed this morning. Flood waters approached the K39 highway near the Neosho River bridge, with several other routes in the fourth division closed. Detours provided on US59 in Ottawa. Detours also listed for US166 east of Niotaze, US160 east of Independence, and K135 west of La Cygne, K7 north of Harden, and K31 west of Fulton.
Mrs. Clara J. Christman widow of a Christman department store founder accidentally drowned in her Joplin apartment Saturday night. Body found by the manager in an overflowing tub. Coroner ruled accidental drowning. Christman store later sold to Macy's in 1954.
A nail in driver John Sanders mouth distracted him and caused a 10:30 a.m. crash into Floyd Prather’s 1958 Buick at 1004 S. Evergreen, with $150 damage to Sanders Ford and Buick. Later at 5:25 p.m. William Payton backed into William Stanley’s 1961 Ford at 2 E. Main, causing $35 damage to the left rear.
Neosho Memorial Hospital observes National Hospital Week with daily open houses 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today through Friday and a career day for students. The 10th anniversary year marks ongoing expansion including new obstetrics and patient bed wings boosting capacity to 93 beds.
