Officials in Iowa City and the University of Iowa monitor for a potential renewed wave of violent protest activity amid recent tensions. Authorities warn residents to stay vigilant as demonstrations unfold near campus and downtown areas.
Widespread antiwar protests drew up to 2000 people across campuses and cities. Nearly 200 arrests occurred as disturbances flared at the University of Maryland and tensions rose with National Guard curfews. Authorities planned contingencies amid injuries and property damage in Iowa and beyond.

The 20th Community Art Fair entries were judged this afternoon in a closed session at the Central Park building. Over 300 entries will be exhibited tonight from 7 to 9 pm with additional hours 2 to 7 pm Saturday and 2 to 5 pm Sunday. Awards announced Sunday afternoon at a tea. Ted Watts, judge, is a commercial artist and ad manager for the Southeast Kansas Independent Observer in Oswego.
The city reviews cost estimates and engineering data for a new traffic signal at the Main and Lincoln intersection. The plan includes four poles and five traffic lanes with a center left turn lane and a delayed signal to clear turning motorists. Parking would be restricted for half a block on Lincoln, with City Commission approval needed and State Highway Commission involvement. City Engineer Floyd Heath continues utility line work under the streets.
The Kansas attorney general says a city may not use zoning to exclude a private liquor club. The opinion notes zoning can regulate, not prohibit, and that prohibiting clubs through zoning is discriminatory and unlawful. Issuance of a license could be sought via mandamus if the ordinance is invalid.
Norman authorities report Wendy Berlowitz a University of Oklahoma graduate English instructor disrobed before her freshman class claiming all should have the right to take their clothes off She was dismissed. A previous instructor Romney Phelps undressed in front of his class last week and was fired and later admitted to Central State Hospital for observation.
Acting Director L Patrick Gray III says he will run the FBI with a clear difference in manner and style from J Edgar Hoover. He rejects interim labeling, notes his surprise appointment by President Nixon, and plans reforms and greater internal ideas and public scrutiny after Hoover's death.
In central highlands near Chu Pao mountain pass and Kontum, heavy combat erupted to control Highway 14. South Vietnamese officials say 75 North Vietnamese were killed along the highway and on the mountain, with many slain by Allied air bombs and rockets after a convoy had cleared the road.
The government reported the steepest wholesale price drop in eight months led by a 2.9 percent fall in meats poultry and fish. Overall farm products and processed foods declined seven tenths of one percent while employment and unemployment stayed near prior levels with a 5.9 percent jobless rate.
In London three of 204 state secondary schools faced strikes as 50 of 3,250 pupils from two boys schools and one girls school joined protests. The action, led by 18-year-old Stephen Finch of the Schools' Action Union, disrupted lessons for two days and targeted pupil power amid crowded classes and teacher shortages.
The Republican Party unanimously approved shifting the 1972 national convention from San Diego to Miami Beach due to rising costs and labor worries. The Aug. 21 to 23 dates remain unchanged.
New Delhi and Islamabad accused each other of the gravest cease-fire violations in Kashmir since last December's war, coming just five days after agreeing to a summit on peace. The Indian controlled province has long fueled the India Pakistan dispute since 1947.
