In Los Angeles a separated couple met by chance while both were in California mental hospitals. Plans to reunite them at Camarillo were canceled as Mr X collapsed and died of a heart attack, leaving the outcome unresolved.
Supreme Court Justice Charles E. Whittaker retires effective April 1 at age 61 after five years on the bench. The President offered no comment on a successor as Kennedy could gain his first appointment to the court. Whittaker, appointed by Eisenhower in 1957, is one of four Republicans on the nine member court.
A terse weather digest from Topeka notes yesterday’s high 82 at Topeka and Lawrence with lows in the 30s to 40s today. a cold front ushered a 35 degree daytime drop. Precipitation included light rain across eastern areas and minimal snow in the northwest. measurable amounts were .05 inch at Goodland and .01 inch at Garden City. Berthot Construction Co of Chanute emerged as the apparent low bidder for a new division highway maintenance building in Topeka. Walter Naylor, office engineer, said the bid amount was not released. Bids were opened Tuesday by the State Department of Administration. The brick building, south of the fourth division highway offices on West 14th, will be about 200 by 90 feet and must be completed within ten calendar months. The current maintenance shop east of the offices will be used for storage and sheet metal storage buildings will be removed.

In Clinton South Carolina three young children were found dead in an abandoned freezer locker. Victims are Phyllis Craig four Sylvia Craig three and Angelia Davis three daughters of local families Stonewall Craig and Tom Davis. Police investigate the incident as a tragedy with no immediate motive known.
In Erie the Beeney couple remain jailed for causing truancy of their two youngest children. The four older children and their grandmother keep a vigil outside the courthouse as the case enters its third week. A visiting Illinois delegation spoke with the older children while avoiding the family. The couple declined to meet the group.

Neal McCoy was named president of the Chanute Lions Club for 1962 63 succeeding Marion Stevens. New officers include Tommy Baughn and Fred Johnston as vice presidents Gene Geyer as vice president and Ervin Brune as secretary treasurer. The Highway Commission backs re designation of K96 as a federal route spanning 488 miles from the Missouri line near Columbus to the Colorado line near Tribune. Colorado and Missouri officials join in proposing extension to Pueblo Colorado and Carthage Missouri. A delegation asked rerouting K13 to bypass Manhattan and connect with US 24 near Riley via K213.
