A union Good Friday service sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance will run noon to 3 PM at First Methodist Church. Pastors from Evangelical United Brethren, Christian Church, Church of the Nazarene, Colfax Baptist, First Baptist, Church of God, Grant Avenue Baptist, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, and St Pauls Lutheran will lead meditations and sermons on The Seven Last Words from the Cross with choir selections and a closing benediction by Rev William Hunt.

The National Safety Council says February marked the 12th consecutive month with higher deaths than the same month a year earlier. Fatalities reached an all time February high with 2,630 deaths, matching February totals from 1941 and 1952 as driving carelessness is blamed for a faster rise than travel.

Garden City Prisoner Found Dead in Cell
Walter William Gilmore, 53, of Garden City, was found dead in his jail cell last night. Police say he apparently hanged himself with a belt after a drunkenness arrest. He is survived by a sister and brother in Kansas City.

Man Kills Wife and Self in Kansas City Kitchen
Police report John Christianson 43 fatally shot his estranged wife 37 then killed himself in the kitchen as their 11 year old son Michael Dougherty ran to a neighbor for help. Mrs Christianson died at Providence Hospital after surgery for a bullet wound. The couple, married six years, had been separated about a month.

Progreso Mexico port officials say 21 passengers and 14 crew were rescued from the 300 ton motor vessel Matul after an engine room explosion sparked a fire that caused the ship to burn and sink about 60 miles north northwest of Campeche. The crew and passengers were taken to Campeche aboard the coast guard boat Virgilio Uribie and an amphibian plane. Captain Ignacio Ferrer ira among those saved.
