Five armed bandits hijack beef tractor in Baltimore County

Frank Rumons and his wife Rita of Kansas City said they were held for three hours as five armed thieves hijacked a trailer carrying 37,604 pounds of beef worth 45000 dollars. The couple were blindfolded then released near a police station after the cargo was removed.

Rail freight rate hike approved across regions

The Interstate Commerce Commission approved permanent freight rate increases nearly 12 percent in the eastern and western United States and 6 percent in the South. Total new revenues fall about 300 million below railroad requests, with much of the rise initially granted as temporary boosts.

Budget cuts struck by House Ways and Means in Kansas

The Kansas House Ways and Means Committee trimmed Gov. Docking’s budget by more than 17.5 million including a 5.22 million general fund cut to welfare and a 12.29 million cut to the Highway Commission. Governor asks extension of homestead deadline for seniors

Gov. Robert Docking urged the Legislature to push the homestead exemption filing deadline to year end. The 1970 law set April 15 as the final date. He noted many seniors may be unaware of this tax relief for those over 65.

Shigella Outbreak Reported at Parsons State Hospital

An outbreak of shigella at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center sickened 60 patients and 22 employees. Most cases are mild and few victims require bed confinement. In Topeka the Kansas Neurological Institute reported several cases since December with some still recovering and no new outbreaks.
