Molly Brown returns to Earth after Gemini 3 flight

Cape Kennedy AP reports astronauts Virgil Grissom and John Young landed the Molly Brown in the Atlantic some 25 to 30 miles from the Intrepid after a successful spaceflight. Grissom and Young steered Gemini 3 into a new nearly circular orbit 97 to 105 miles high during the first of three planned orbits, marking a historic milestone in space rendezvous capability.

Hanson Plays Part in Gemini Flight Milestone

Delmar Hanson an electronics engineer for the McDonnell Corporation tested capsule systems for the Gemini mission launched from Cape Kennedy. The Chanute native, a 1952 graduate, worked on environmental control and electrical tests aboard Molly Brown while Grissom piloted the three orbit flight aided by Syncom 2 communications satellite. The mission reported minor issues easily corrected and showcased early rendezvous and satellite tracking maneuvers.

Churchill Fabricating Shop Damaged By Fire

Churchill Inc fabricating shop at 17 S Ashby burned out in minutes after workers left. Fire started in the northwest part and spread between ceiling and roof, destroying about half the shop. Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic death log shows 26 fatalities for the 1965 period from March to 9 am Tuesday, contrasting a 128 fatality count in the comparable 1964 period. The log covers 24 hours ending Tuesday 9 am and notes a total of 117 deaths for March 1965.

March In Rain Dampens Selma Civil Rights March

Rain dampened about 300 marchers on the third day of the 50 mile Selma to Montgomery march in Lowndes County. Dr. King left the pasture campsite to attend a staff conference in Selma and will depart for Cleveland for a program honoring him. He plans to return by Wednesday or Thursday. The group began at 8 a.m. and still faced roughly 25 miles of highway toward the right to vote.

City awards plant expansion contract to Caldwell Construction Co

The city commission awarded the ILC plant expansion to Caldwell Construction Co of Chanute. Ralph Caldwell led the low bid at 32 995 with a 3 000 add alternate. Arch ie K. Lynch and Berthoz Construction bid 36 496 and 37 327 respectively. Expansion doubles floor space with steel construction and 60 working days completion.

Public Opinion Ballot on Pavilion Project for Chanute

A public opinion ballot will be held in the April 6 Chanute city election on improving the Central Park pavilion with a $35 000 general obligation bond that voters approved in 1948.
