Car Damage at Erie on Fourth and Main

A 1958 Ford station wagon driven by Mrs. Mar Miles Rickart sustained rear damage estimated at 75 dollars after backing from the curb near 4th and Main in Chanute. No other injuries reported. The driver is a teacher at Duecy High School and member of local church groups and teacher associations.

Rusk claims Soviet bloc blocks test ban pact in Geneva

At the 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva Secretary of State Rusk accused the Soviet Union of blocking a nuclear test ban treaty as Washington and Britain failed to win agreement. Gromyko denied the charge and blamed the United States for resuming atmospheric tests.

Blind guide dog Simon regains sight after corneal graft

Simon the guide dog for 26 year old John Thomas had gone blind, then regained vision after Britain’s first dual corneal graft on a dog. The dog now leads his master again with steady care. Thomas, who has been blind since age 15, thanked the surgeon and veterinarian and gave silver statuettes in gratitude.

City Purchases 72 Acre Tract for Industrial Development

City Manager R. J. Hayes announced the purchase of a 74 acre tract south of the new water plant on Katy for industrial development. The property was bought from the M. H. Hatinettes estate for 4000 dollars, with an old house on the site to be demolished.

Firemen from several towns gather in Chanute for a two day regional fire school co sponsored by the Kansas State Firemen Assn University of Kansas Extension Service Kansas Inspection Bureau state fire marshal and Chanute fire department about 250 expected. Opening program includes invocation welcome and greetings with demonstrations led by Ed Munday and a dry vacuum test water drafting and hydrant pumping. An evening picnic and state fire marshal films follow and Sunday features more demos at City Park including liquefied oxygen staged by Forbes AFB Topeka and a controlled house burn at an unannounced location.

Beeney Family Remains in Custody as Court Upholds Jail Terms

ERIE The Beeney family status remains unchanged with Mr and Mrs Beeney in jail and their two youngest children Verla Sue 13 and Letha Faye 6 to be entered in the State Children's Home at Atchison within days. Sheriff and Mrs Jerry Sloan care for the older children as the family camps on the courthouse square awaiting re establishment. The parents each receive 30 days for failing to educate the children due to a prophecy claiming Eric would be destroyed. The girls will attend school at the state home until the family is re united.

Erie Youths Fined For Petty Larceny

Four Erie youths were fined five dollars and costs in justice court at St. Paul for petty larceny after being arrested around 2 a.m. for stealing gasoline. The group included George C. Lockwood 18 Donald Depee 17 Stanley L. Clark 18 and Gary Quirin 20.

Bear ejects in capsule flight lands at Edwards Air Force Base

An escape capsule from a B58 dropped a 2 year old female American black bear near Edwards Air Force Base. The bear rode in a clamshell capsule for 7 minutes 49 seconds from 35000 feet at 870 mph, was unstrapped, examined at the Edwards lab, and appeared unharmed.

Refugee family breaches Berlin Wall with three children

West Berlin police say a refugee family escaped through the Berlin Wall in midtown Charlottenburg late Thursday night. The group included three children, the youngest two months old and the oldest 20 months, with details of the escape not released.

Chamber of Commerce Plans Future Events and Meetings

The Chanute Chamber of Commerce outlined plans at a board meeting for a Clean Up Paint Up Fix Up Week in May 2026 promoted by the PR committee. Officials discussed partnering with Mid-America Inc for a July industrial fair at Parsons and sending vendor invites, plus the state chamber convention April 23-24 at Hutchinson. A chairman for the spring annual meeting is to be appointed and a local session with Kansas State University extension leaders on the regional economic survey is being prepared.

Trucker Killed in I-70 Crash West of Wakeeney

James R. Bruch, 24, of Plainville Kansas, died when a semi left Interstate 70 four miles west of Wakeeney, overturned in a ditch. His wife was hospitalized for treatment.
