In Ellsworth Scott Pruitt 8 and sister Debbie 13 shot a King Kong movie on a family color TV. The BB gun blast stopped the ape and the picture tube. mom Dwaine Pruitt said the repair bill topped 200 dollars.
More than 10 000 American troops launched a major counteroffensive 40 miles northwest of Saigon to blunt Viet Cong and North Vietnamese pressure on the South Vietnamese capital. U S forces pressed a compression drive with multiple divisions while air and artillery strikes killed at least 28 enemy soldiers, with several skirmishes continuing in the same corridor. General Abrams said the spring offensive has been contained though risks remain.
Robert C. Wilson was chosen Chamber of Commerce president for 1969 70 at the Monday board meeting. He succeeds Ron Poor who resigned after moving to Neosho Missouri. Wilbur Allison becomes vice president with Wayne Umbarger and Fred Holmes filling other officer posts. Ed Renz Jr. announced the Spring Festival will run May 8 to 10 replacing the Fall Festival.
The steering committee for the newly formed nine-county Resource Conservation and Development project RC D convened at the Neosho County courthouse in Erie. Paul Hunter Labette County was elected president with Gene Jacquinot Crawford County as vice president Ed Worley Neodesha secretary and Ray Pershall Allen County treasurer.
Thayer hosts a melon production meeting led by Dr Charles Hall Kansas State University Manhattan horticulturist developer of Crimson Sweet watermelon. The 7:30 p.m. event in the ATA hall is open to all interested in melon varieties production practices and disease and insect control with Frank Morrison extension specialist. Sponsored by the Neosho County Extension Council and Farm Products Management Inc. Girls Scout Fair displays follow Sunday 3 to 5 p.m. Central Park Community Building open to the public no admission.

Gov. Robert Docking vetoed the GOP highway construction bill for a second year, blasting a two cent gasoline tax hike, bond rate limits, and diesel fuel tax changes. He warned sale viability and tax implications threaten public interest and warned of two separate effective dates for the tax increase.

A sweet gum tree was planted on the west lawn of Royster Junior High in memory of Susan Kay Smith an eighth grader who died Feb 2. Money for the tree came from Susan's classmates. the Royster Student Council funded the tree. A short dedication will be held later. Susan 13 daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Smith died at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a member of Colfax Baptist Church.
