American Troops Begin Large Offensive Near Saigon

More than 10 000 American troops launched a major counteroffensive 40 miles northwest of Saigon to blunt Viet Cong and North Vietnamese pressure on the South Vietnamese capital. U S forces pressed a compression drive with multiple divisions while air and artillery strikes killed at least 28 enemy soldiers, with several skirmishes continuing in the same corridor. General Abrams said the spring offensive has been contained though risks remain.

Wilson elected Chanute Chamber president for 1969 70

Robert C. Wilson was chosen Chamber of Commerce president for 1969 70 at the Monday board meeting. He succeeds Ron Poor who resigned after moving to Neosho Missouri. Wilbur Allison becomes vice president with Wayne Umbarger and Fred Holmes filling other officer posts. Ed Renz Jr. announced the Spring Festival will run May 8 to 10 replacing the Fall Festival.

Nine-County RC D Elects Officers in Erie Meeting

The steering committee for the newly formed nine-county Resource Conservation and Development project RC D convened at the Neosho County courthouse in Erie. Memorial Tree Planted At Royster Junior High

A sweet gum tree was planted on the west lawn of Royster Junior High in memory of Susan Kay Smith an eighth grader who died Feb 2. Money for the tree came from Susan's classmates. the Royster Student Council funded the tree. A short dedication will be held later. Susan 13 daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Smith died at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a member of Colfax Baptist Church.
