A federal judge in Montgomery delayed an immediate ruling in a civil rights case seeking a right to a Selma to Montgomery voting march. Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr set a later decision after a five day hearing. Maj. John Cloud testified state troopers used tear gas and clubs on March 7 to disperse the first march, and he claimed he did not issue a tear gas order though he aimed to.
Pixie Reagan an exotic dancer died in a Kansas City apartment fire early today. Fire officials said careless cigarette handling started the blaze, confined to the upstairs unit. Reagan's real name was De Lore Eisenberg, about 30, with a booking agent hinting she left a mother and daughter in Oklahoma.
TOPEKA AP Six Democratic state senators called Gov. Avery tax hike proposals unnecessary to fund next year’s budget. They offered an alternative funding plan: use $25 million of accumulated balances, apply a withholding system to corporations, and raise the remainder via limited sales tax increase or graduated income tax changes, noting 14 states don’t allow federal tax deduction.

Tuesday at 8 a.m. junior high and 1 p.m. Murray Hill. Wednesday 8:30 a.m. Hutton, 1 p.m. Alcott, and 2:30 p.m. Lincoln. Readings occur about a week after testing.

He cited Selma as a turning point and called for a simple uniform standard to remove barriers affecting Black voters. House hearings were planned for next week with actions anticipated by early next month.

Woodson county youth Jack Ellis was arrested in Iola on a charge of taking clothing from a man’s apartment where he had been staying. Officers say Ellis left Chanute for Montana, and the property was reported missing after the man returned. Ellis was held overnight in Erie jail on $100 bond and scheduled for a court hearing.
A burning milk truck caused 80 to 85 grass fires along a 60 mile route from west of Lyons to Iuka. Driver Orville Potter, 45, from Pratt, was unaware his truck was on fire until stopping at Iuka. Winds fed flames that threatened oil wells and destroyed a fire department vehicle. five other Rice County fires were confined to rights of way and a farm pony was killed.
