City engineer Pas chal Grimes estimates dust depth on a typical acre at 0.0002 feet yielding 8,712 cubic feet or about 784 pounds per acre. A 90,000 square foot block would hold roughly 18 cubic feet of dust equaling 1,620 pounds or 81 tons per block.
Neosho Memorial Hospital posted a net operating loss of 11000 during 1956 per annual audit presented at a hospital trustees meeting. Chairman Harold R. Williams blamed free service, rising costs, and uncollectible accounts, urging county funds to cover the shortfall. Payroll accounted for 16167.60 of last month’s 26535.21 expenses.
A Leavenworth Kansas trucker, 37 year old William Garnett, died when his semi trailer went off a 40 foot embankment on Highway 3 two miles east of Fairbury Nebraska. The Gould Battery Co. owned truck loaded with batteries.
A large turnout is urged for a Tuesday Emporia meeting led by Gov. Docking and civic leaders from eastern Kansas river valleys. The rally aims to press federal and state authorities for dam projects in the Neosho Cottonwood Verdigris basins to control floods and secure water storage, with construction updates on Toronto and Burlington sites and plans to hire private engineers for Burlington.
New York Columbia University instructor Charles Van Doren earns a $100 a year salary increase effective July 1 raising his pay to 4500 annually. Tax authorities estimate he will keep about 28795 of his combined winnings and salary in 1957 after federal and state taxes totaling 104605.

The column will appear each Wednesday with by line By Mrs George Docking and will report activities of the executive family and share recipes and names of Kansas readers.
Kansas City voters defeated by about four to one a proposed one per cent earnings tax in unofficial returns from 250 polling places. The measure, backed by Mayor H Roe Bartle and the city council, would have taxed residents and non residents with a $1000 exemption and aimed to fund seven million dollars in new city services and projects. Opponents led by the Tax Equity Assn and the AFL CIO argued it would hit small wage earners hardest.

Three teenage escapees from the State Training School at Parsons Kansas were captured near Nowata Oklahoma after a farmer spotted them working on a pickup. Sheriff Arch Sequichie identified the youths as Garland Reed 13 Richard Shores 16 and Larry Reece 15 and said the truck bore a Parsons license plate later found as stolen.
George R Powers a 72 year old Thayer area farmer was killed when his clothing caught on a nail while near a tractor operated water pump at his home northeast of Thayer. Deputy sheriff Lee Montgomery coroner Dr Howard Swain and undersheriff Jack Reynolds investigated. Powers born Sept 1 1884 spent most of his life near Thayer. Survived by wife Rosa Decker Powers four sons two daughters 14 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Friday 2 30 p m at Thayer Christian church with interment in Thayer cemetery. Engel Funeral Home Thayer in charge.
The eastbound Santa Fe Super Chief carves a car in two at a Cimarron grade crossing. Two of the four teenage occupants, Dale Herron and Buddy Houk both 16, die. Julius Thomas Steiner 21 of Red Wing Kansas died when his car left K96 on a curve four miles north of Sterling. Police reported the fatal early morning crash and noted the vehicle's path off the road on the rural stretch.

Dr. A M Garton of 19 S Lafayette bruised and shaken but able to work after a collision on Second Street with a 1957 Mercury driven by Nancy Willcott of 810 S Central. Garton said he did not see the Willcott car. footfeed stuck as cars met near 201 Lincoln causing Garton’s Plymouth to hit a tree south of the fire station. Willcott uninjured. A separate 6 p.m. crash at Third and Forest damaged a 1955 Buick driven by Hershel Dee Parsons and a 1941 Dodge owned by Arthur A Cochran.
Calvin Arthur Davis, 76, operator of Davis Pipe and Supply, died at Neosho Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Born Aug 24, 1880 in Arcadia, he lived in Woodson and Chanute, worked in oil fields, refineries, and for Sapulpa Refining. Survived by wife May, son Fay, grandson J. C. Davis, two great grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. Burial Friday at 2 PM in Elmwood Cemetery.

Four of six city commissioner candidates will be named at the primary to appear on the April 2 city election ballot. Two commissioners will be elected. No school board primary was required. a candidate series will run after the primary.
Donald H. Simon of Topeka will become district Boy Scout executive in three central Iowa counties effective March 16. Frank Burns and Larry S. Wilson, cashier at the Junior Tall Corn area council press First National Bank, underwent major operation at Neosho Memorial Hospital today. His condition this afternoon following the operation was reported as good.
Five bomb threats forced searches of 36 planes in the East, Midwest and South, delaying about 1,000 passengers. Trans World Airlines searched 28 planes in four hours after a hoax call to its Manhattan office. planes landed at Newark, Idlewild, LaGuardia and others in Philadelphia Boston Baltimore Pittsburgh Detroit and Cleveland. American Airlines checked one Convair in Philadelphia after a caller warned of dynamite on a Boston to New York flight. Delta Airlines searched three planes in Newark Houston and Charlotte after a Philadelphia threat about a Newark bound plane.
