Bridge Closures Planned After County Inspectors Report

A Monday meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the Erie courthouse will discuss closing nine bridges including four over the Neosho River. The recommendations come from Cook Flatt & Strobel after inspecting 61 bridges on the county secondary road system and include several that are already repaired or slated for repair with total replacement costs over 1 million dollars.

Kansas lawmakers pass districting plan as session ends

The Kansas Senate and House reached a conference deal on reapportionment sending the plan to Gov. Docking. Changes remove the House 80 member target and drop the Iola inclusion in Sen Tom Van Sickle’s district. at large representation remains in Sedgwick and Johnson counties. Legislature will reconvene March 20 for veto considerations.

Kansas high school 5A semifinals shake up Wichita

Shawnee Mission South defeated Wichita Southeast 59 to 47 while Wichita East beat Wichita 58 to 69 in the 5A semifinals in Wichita. Other scores include 4A at Lawrence and 3A at Emporia with Garden City and Topeka West advancing.

Judge Asked Out of Case in Atkins Prosecution

District Court Judge George Donaldson is asked to disqualify himself from the State versus Harry Atkins case. Administrative Judge Don Musser will decide. Atkins faces aggravated battery, attempted kidnapping, and gun possession charges. he was jailed after an alleged January attack on Neosho County Attorney Raymond Radford. Weather: unseasonably warm with clear to partly cloudy skies and gusty southwest winds.
