Fighting near Hoai, 285 miles northeast of Saigon, left a U.S. Marine officer and at least 18 Vietnamese soldiers dead, plus over 63 Viet Cong. A Marine officer was wounded in the cheek and evacuated to Nha Trang. Outposts near Hoai fell to Communist grip before dawn as reinforcements pressed the town. In Da Nang, Buddhist-Catholic clashes erupted after a soldier stabbing, while three Marines died from heat on Da Nang heights. Air support raided Laos with jets, and new Viet Cong skirmishes near Da Nang produced brief exchanges with no U.S. losses.

Manhunt Under Way in Greenwood County After Break-Ins
