A civil engineer's wooden box level was found east of Chanute by Elmer Winter of the city maintenance department. The discovery occurred near where Main Street turns north to Highway K39, just inside the city limits.
A Kansas survey reports 1954 secondary recovery in Neosho Allen and Woodson counties. Neosho had 9 projects producing 390 014 barrels from 702 wells. Allen had 11 projects yielding 521 799 barrels from 601 wells. Woodson produced 22 322 barrels from 44 wells. Further Wil son data unavailable.
Denver report notes the need to emphasize listening in schools. Dr. Helen K. Mackintosh of the U.S. Office of Education cites that most youngsters struggle with oral presentation alone and that people speak, read, write, and listen at far different rates.
New York state tops the nation with 2,230,000 war veterans as of December 31, reported by Veterans Administration figures. The state accounts for over 10 percent of the 22,131,000 American veterans, with California second at 1,839,000. Kansas ends 1955 with 270,000 veterans. In a separate note, Mr and Mrs Dwane Ashcraft and Mrs Opal Currie and Tommy of Erie were dinner guests of Elizabeth Currie Thursday.

Firemen responded to an oil lease five miles east and 14 miles south of Chanute where a power house and equipment were destroyed. Willis estimates up to $10,000 in losses with some insurance. Earlier, at 6:50 p.m., a separate blaze at the Burghart farm east of Chanute destroyed about four tons of baled hay. The cause of the oil-lease fire was not determined.
A Midland Texas woman wrote the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce saying Virginia is ideal. She cites wind dust rawness and monotony in Texas and asks for information on Portsmouth.
Vice President Nixon cast the tie breaking vote to reject the higher rigid wheat supports, preserving an $1.81 per bushel price for this year. The move followed a clerical error and a sharp Senate uproar over whether Nixon could vote.

In Columbus Ohio police officers from the vice squad, William Voorhis and Ted Hatzo, helped arrest Tony R Payne 23 of Toledo after a car theft scene. A stolen unmarked cruiser tied to the officers was involved as three gunshots followed a collision.
Four Town high school girls Judy Damman Lois Davis Janeane Fahrney and Gloria Jensma received 30 day jail sentences after pleading guilty to disrupting the peace with a fictitious kidnapping tale. They may seek parole to return to Newton Iowa schools while federal authorities consider charges for giving false information to the FBI.
TOPEKA Republican leaders nominate Rolla Clymer and Rep. Clifford Hope for key posts at the Wichita state convention on April 14. State chairman Lloyd Ruppenthal says the committee prefers Clymer as temporary chairman and Hope as permanent chairman, with routine officers elected by the gathering. The plan also includes four state delegates at large and possible alternates, plus endorsement of two presidential electors.
