Pioneer IV Orbit Quest Near Sun After Cape Canaveral Launch

Pioneer IV surged from Cape Canaveral soon after midnight as scientists reported an initial 24,890 mph speed and rapid distance gains. By early morning it stood about 66,000 miles out with tracking fronts at Goldstone Puerto Rico and Jodrell Bank coordinating observations as NASA predicted an eventual sun orbit beyond the Moon.

The fire department made 33 runs last month with estimated city losses around 200 dollars. Grass fires accounted for 14 alarms with no damage. two runs cooled gasoline. one involved a locked door issue. Ten runs occurred outside the city limits in Tioga township Canville township and Allen County. There were three residential fires and two car fires in Chanute. One resuscitator call occurred and six homes were checked for carbon monoxide. The February tally brings total runs since Jan 1 to 53 with city losses about 2,550 dollars, compared with 17 runs and about 1,594 loss in early 1958.

Air Force Band Scheduled for Next Fall Concert

The Chamber of Commerce plans a major engagement with an internationally known Air Force band. Negotiations proceed after board approval at yesterday’s regular meeting. If accepted, the show would come to the area mid October with details to be finalized.

Truck Accident Fatal To Kansas City Man

S. M. McKee a 67 year old vice president of Nourse Oil Co. died after a backing truck pinned him against a loading dock at KU Medical Center. The driver said McKee fell from the dock and became trapped upright as responders arrived.

Prairie Fire Near Buffalo Threatens Homes

A prairie fire seven miles northwest of Buffalo burned five sections of grassland around 2 p.m. yesterday, threatening about six houses and cattle. About 500 people including Buffalo volunteers aided the effort, and the flames were controlled three hours later with no reported losses.

Traffic Accident Fatal to Schoolboy in Kansas City

A 6 year old boy, Bobby Wiles, son of Mr and Mrs William Wiles, was fatally struck by a car driven by Charles T Bombeck Jr 53 yesterday. He allegedly darted from between two parked cars. This marked Kansas City ninth traffic fatality of the year, up from four at the same date last year.

Jones Jr. in Serious Condition After Heart Attack

Hugh T. Jones Jr. 41 of 22 S Steuben suffered a heart attack Sunday and is a patient at Neosho Memorial Hospital. Jones operates Cha nute Lumber Co. and serves on the Bank of Commerce board of directors.

Nine Pupils Die as Bus Dives Into Pond in Georgia

A school bus carrying 86 children veered off a dirt road in Tifton, Georgia, and plunged into a farm pond. Nine children aged 5 to 15 died, 38 were hospitalized, and several others were rescued by bystanders and rescuers. The driver said a rut caused loss of control.

Traffic Fatalities in Topeka Reported for 24 Hours

Kansas traffic fatalities reported by the Accident Records Section list one death in the past 24 hours. To date in 1959 the total stands at 77, compared with 66 in the same period of 1958.

Longtime Chanute Surgeon Dr. L D Johnson Dies in California

Dr. L D Johnson a Chanute surgeon for fifty years died in a Santa Ana California hospital after a stroke on February 7 He would have been eighty two next Monday He and his wife had traveled from Kansas City to Laguna Beach for a vacation He headed Johnson hospital and served as staff chief for many years and built a medical center renowned in the region His career included over twenty thousand major operations and earlier work across multiple states including Denver and Dallas He was born March 9 1877 in Iowa and began in medicine after farming and teaching

Teachers Win New Contracts At Public Schools

The board approved continuing contracts for four teachers Mrs Norma Lloyd Mrs Velda Clum Mrs Ethel Eastburn and Mrs Irene Walker all current part time staff They will teach elementary with two full time and two half time positions New classroom space and enrollment growth were discussed with 85 to 100 more students projected at Senior High and about 70 at Royster Junior High The board also approved census staff appointments C H Pankratz Mrs Kenneth Tebow and Mrs Carl Breiner and a pay raise for Supt Buford Fisher to 8300 plus authorization for a thermal copier for Senior High and Junior College off street loading zone at Murray Hill School was approved The superintendent was elected president elect of the Kansas Association of School Administrators with term to begin later.

Soft Generation Survives 12 Story Fall In Brooklyn

A 4 year old girl Deborah Taylor of Brooklyn survived a 12 story fall from her bedroom window landing in shrubbery and a flower bed two feet from a concrete sidewalk. Earlier a delivery man fell 10 floors in an elevator shaft and was seriously injured. In two weeks several others survived high falls.

Pipeline Worker electrocuted on Parkville job

John Walton aged 23 was killed when a crane boom touched a power line while lowering a pipe into a ditch near Parkville Missouri. He had his hand on the pipe and died instantly according to AP reports.

Police Reports Show January February Bond, Fine Totals

Police department reports 170 calls for service and 11 arrests last month, with bonds and fines totaling 779.44 and January-February combined 1731.25. Twenty-two traffic summonses issued, 65 warnings, 709 parking tickets, 15 traffic accidents with three injuries, 6389 miles covered, 621 gallons gasoline used, lodging for nine sleepers and 32 meals purchased.

Rooming House Fire Fatal for Child and Elderly Woman

A Newark rooming house fire killed a six year old boy and a 62 year old woman identified as building superintendent Agnes Drake. Police said they were found on the first floor near a window. at least 20 others escaped the blaze.

Kansas House approves tax equalization package

In Topeka the Kansas House passed a three piece tax equalization package after a lengthy debate sending it to the Senate. The measures include standardizing assessments to the statewide average about 27 percent of full value, a constitutional amendment to classify utility property and exempt household goods, and a requirement for county commissions to shift assessment dates from March 1 to January 1.

Blood drive reports 126 pints collected by 1 30 p.m

The Red Cross collected 126 pints of blood by 1 30 p m in this city today, with volunteers noting the 160 pint quota looks hard to reach due to many cancellations. 83 appointments were canceled, offset somewhat by 50 drop ins.

Brazil Air Force crash victims recovered for burial

The bodies of 13 passengers and five crewmen killed in the Brazilian Air Force plane crash have been recovered and flown to Rio de Janeiro for burial.
