Leonard Imhof state Board of Health sanitary engineer says planning is more critical than current sewage defects. He presented findings from annual inspection to the City Commission, with major focus on extending the sewer collection to the west and north.
The City Commission and the state Highway Commission reached a pact for repair and reconstruction of the North Lincoln overpass. The state will cover costs after emergency fixes. Mayor Vesta Lightfoot and Commissioner John Schultz authorized a Governor’s Committee grant application for a court area improvement. Kenneth Sanborn assisted in Topeka with the grant process. The group also eyed replacing the third floor veterans room and possible new meeting sites.
Ground breaking begins for a building at 619 N Forest to house the Federal Land Bank Association Chanute office serving a 12 county area. The 30 by 50 foot structure is to be completed by June 15 with move in by July 1 under contractor Wayne Burghart and Cherry Street Investment Company.
A head on collision on US 169 near curve 1 resulted in the death of Bradley White Jackson 19 of Prescott and serious injuries to Nelson Eugene Stafford 56 and wife Margaret 52 of Osage Beach Missouri. The Staffords were taken to KU Medical Center and Jackson’s body was sent to Pleasanton after investigation by local police and sheriff deputies.
The Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee failed the proposed privilege tax on financial institutions on a 5-4 vote. The measure would have added about 3.5 million dollars in state revenue, with chair Sen. Frank Hodge of Hutchinson saying the action effectively killed the governor’s budget funding plan.
The Kansas Highway Commission issued bids for 586 miles of maintenance resurfacing and road construction. Director John Montgomery said most sealing jobs would be in south central and western Kansas, with the largest US 24 State Avenue improvement in Kansas City. Also planned are park road works at Milford Fall River and Cheney state parks.

They soon halted when authorities reminded that dueling is illegal and agreed to negotiate over the plate. In Washington the Senate rejected Ervin’s bid to bar federal officials from blocking a student’s attendance at the nearest school by 67 to 26. In Topeka a Continental Trailways driver suffered a heart attack and was replaced by passenger Lucille Widsteen who steered the bus to safety. Wilbur Andrews was reported in serious condition.
In Topeka the Kansas House concurred with Senate amendments and sent the reapportionment bill to Gov. Robert Docking for his signature. The measure changes the composition of the Kansas House of Representatives.
The Oklahoma Senate Judiciary Committee voted to indefinitely postpone action on a bill to liberalize abortion law. The panel had previously weakened the measure by setting an eight week limit for terminations, which sponsors argued misses many early pregnancies.
Public service buildings and grounds crews at the University of Kansas resumed full duties after an agreement with the university and union officials. Details were sparse but a more equitable overtime policy was disclosed, replacing wage time with time off for overtime in the past.
