Violent storm rips through city causing trailer damage

A violent storm with 80 mph winds and 115 mph gusts toppled trees and disrupted power in the city. Roger and Jana Orton escaped a crushed trailer with minor injuries after a fallen tree pinned them. a 14-foot trailer rolled and two camper covers were overturned. Kansas highway patrolman Roland Vogel reported the severity after the event near South Central.

Chanute voters to decide sales tax and five member council

City Commission moves to place two questions on the November ballot for Chanute voters. A one half percent sales tax and a five member city commission are under consideration to fund services and reflect community cross section. Mayor Cunningham and commissioners argue the public should decide, while others caution about effectiveness and alternatives.

Chanute Honored Again in Aviation Hall of Fame

Octave Chanute, city namesake and aviation historian, was posthumously honored in the International Aerospace Hall of Fame. His great grandson presented a copy of Progress in Flying Machines as a permanent IAHF collection piece, while a scaled Chanute glider model was added to the exhibition.
