Chanute residents bring in a mother bat with two babies, a red velvet ant, and another bat family. A Dalmatian mascot named Jean dies after a truck engine start trap at Chanute fire station. she had served since 1951 and was buried beside the station.
Seoul procures 400000 dollars of United Nations bond issue, exceeding the asked amount by 20000 dollars, as announced by the Cabinet today.
About 31 persons enrolled in a four day district water and sewer works operators school in Chanute ended yesterday.Participants included Wilbur Moffatt and L W Trelorgen from Chanute along with Donald Briggs and Kenneth Trammell. The course had eight two hour sessions led by Dr. Raymond C. Loehr of Kansas University. The program covered plant operation maintenance safety and water purification methods. Sponsors included the Kansas Water Pollution Control Assn the Kansas Section of the American Water Works Assn the Kansas State Board of Health and the University of Kansas extension service. This Chanute session is the first of six district schools to be held statewide.
In Washington Senator Mundt pressed Agriculture Secretary Freeman on the lack of written records of talks related to the Billie Sol Estes affair. Freeman defended steps to curb misconduct and noted possible limits to records, while Mundt urged formal written logs.

The Topeka AP reports warm humid conditions in Kansas with chance of scattered thundershowers through Saturday. Recent showers were confined to a belt from Nemaha county to Crawford county with small measured amounts. Radar shows brief local showers statewide and highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s with overnight lows 65 to 72.
CHICAGO AP Between 110 and 150 Americans may be killed in traffic accidents during the Independence Day celebration the National Safety Council said. President Howard Pyle said the toll would rise no higher than 110 if motorists observe safe driving but could reach 150 with errors. An additional 6 000 to 8 000 could be disabled by injuries beyond the day. The holiday runs 6 p m July 3 to midnight July 4 with an estimated 2.7 billion miles driven. If fatalities reach 150 it would be a one day record.
Sir Winston Churchill will undergo an open operation on his fractured left thigh at Middlesex Hospital after returning from Monte Carlo by special jet ambulance. Doctors said his condition is satisfactory despite the long journey and that the operation is scheduled for tonight.
Miriam D. Phillips of Santa Rosa California is named superintendent of the Kansas Women's Industrial Farm at Lansing effective July 1. She led the Los Guilucos School for Girls and scored highest on a civil service exam for the post. Announced by H. Crouse acting warden. Kaiser and Rexroad concur. Phillips has 20 years in state hospital work and delinquent girls supervision.
Dr. W Clark Wescoe chancellor of the University of Kansas was reelected to the American Medical Association council on medical economics and hospitals during the Chicago meeting.

Kansas traffic death log shows 24 hours to 9 am Friday with 4 fatalities. June total 43 deaths, year 1962 total 252. For comparison, 1961 period recorded 270 deaths.
Janet Patton a 19 year old beauty from Galena in Cherokee county will carry the hopes of district three for continued domination of the state dairy princess title. Miss Patton daughter of Mr and Mrs L Bruce Patton of Galena was crowned district dairy princess over five other contestants after a coronation dinner at the Tioga Hotel here last night. She will join the nine other district winners in the state judging during the State Fair at Hutchinson in September. Bonnie Uppendahl runnerup to the district title is 18 Montgomery county dairy princess from Independence. Miss Patton was crowned by the reigning state dairy princess Carolyn Thompson of Chanute. Miss Thompson daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Thompson R 2 will represent Kansas in the American Dairy Princess judging next fall. The other contestants were Nancy Brannin Oswego Marjorie Walker Moline Linda Lu VanCleave Galesburg and Pat Fail Earlton Wilson County. Judges were Tom Maxwell Allen County farm agent and Mr and Mrs Ivan Strickler all of Iola. Bill Winfrey manager for the Kansas Dairy Assn told attendees that district 3 has dominated the state contest during six years of the contest with three state winners. Carolyn Thompson praised for her year as state titleholder spoke on activities including a Today Show appearance and addressing the Kansas House and Senate. She urged dairy use noting 15 percent of the average family budget goes to dairy products and that the dairy cow is a vital food factory. The program included invocation by John DeMott Erie Neosho county June Dairy Month chairman, parental introductions, and talks on the dairy industry by each contestant. Floyd Potter was master of ceremonies. The Chanute Chamber of Commerce agricultural committee sponsored the contest.
The Kansas Board of Regents requests 42,508,843 in general fund appropriations for 1964 operations at state schools. The plan increases operating funds by 4.2 million to 404 million and caps capital requests at 768,394, excluding the medical center building. Projections show full-time enrollments rising from 32,366 to 34,150 at the state institutions.
In Jerusalem reports say Israel may expel Robert A. Soblen, a life term fugitive and Soviet spy, rather than grant him a visa to stay. Awaiting trial on entering Israel with false papers, Soblen denies the allegation while his health is cited as a factor in possible expulsion.

Police reported minor demonstrations and arrests for handbill distribution while dignitaries and officials accompanied the presidential party aboard the jet.

Astronaut Virgil I Gus Grissom, second American in space, received a plaque from former President Harry S Truman at the Sertoma International convention. He spoke about the moon mission, predicted a future flight, and invited to join it. Confetti showered him during a downtown parade before he flew to Cape Canaveral to continue space program duties.
