Alfalfa Needs Soil Fertility For Strong Growth
Expert Bill Dickson notes alfalfa relies on soil fertility and proper inoculation at planting. Key nutrients include lime, phosphorus, potash, and possibly boron. soil pH should be 6.5 or higher, with lime raising pH and releasing bound phosphate. Regular soil testing and topdressings support persistent yields.

Overfeeding Not Profitable for Heifer Growth
A Journal of Dairy Science experiment by Dan Pherigo shows that overfeeding heifers to grow faster raises costs and reduces milk yield. Seven twin pairs were used. normally fed heifers averaged 727 pounds while high feeders averaged 964. Fat milk yield dropped to 85 percent and lactation length was 20 days shorter in heavier twins. Dairymen should feed normal requirements.

Lack of Iron Affects Trees
Iron chlorosis causes yellowing in foliage. Solve by acidifying soil and adding iron sulfate and ground sulfur in equal parts. Apply one pound per inch of trunk diameter under tree canopy, adjust for smaller trees. For lawns, dig holes 18 to 24 inches deep, water after filling. Shrubs need eight pounds per 1000 square feet and immediate watering. A faster method is spraying with ferrous sulfate solution and a detergent wetter.

Prune Evergreens In Near Future
ERIE says evergreen plants such as upright and spreading junipers should be pruned within the next couple of weeks. They have shown major growth for the new year and pruning now allows wounds to heal and new foliage to fill open spaces. Maintaining shape preserves the landscape plan and prevents overgrowth from spoiling sight lines and the intended yard effect.

Maintaining Energy Key To Preventing Production Slump
Erie dairy expert Bill Dickson notes summer production drops stem from insufficient total energy. He advises ample pasture plus silage hay or green chop, with energy-rich grain for fiber low feeds and night grazing. A 1200 lb cow should get at least 12 lb hay per day, with grain to cover 7-9 lb TD N if hay is low, and to offset heat reduced appetite.

Mosquito Nuisance Grows After Heavy Rains
Erie reports say mosquitoes have surged due to many temporary water pools from recent rains. Aerosol bombs available locally offer temporary relief.

Flushing diets influence lambing in ewe groups
In a feeding trial, ewes averaged 10.9 pounds gain per ewe. Lot one and lot two received alfalfa hay and sorghum silage with varying sorghum grain. Lot two got twice as much whole sorghum grain as other groups and gained 2.6 pounds more per ewe and about 10 percent more lambs. Lot three replaced alfalfa with soybean meal and, while gains declined, lambing numbers remained similar. Roughly 9 percent lambed in 30 days, indicating small date-of-lambing differences across lots.
