A long running puzzle contest continues with Little Stinker No 9. 2,111 contestants entered this week and the top prize remains up to 110 dollars for a correct solution. The Tribune invites entries by 5 p.m. next Wednesday and explains some clue rules and wordplay from prior puzzles.
A blue heron with a 36 inch wingspan landed on an oil sump near Soldier Creek and became soaked in oil, unable to fly. A Santa Fe switching crew rescued the bird and handed it to the Humane Society where it was bathed daily and fed a fish based diet. After two weeks of care and rehabilitation at two dollars a day, the bird took off from the shelter and returned to the wild to find its own fish.
The city governing board rejected all bids for a clear well at the municipal water plant as above the engineer's estimate of 43908 dollars. Three pump bids were also considered for study to meet specifications with an adjourned session set. Drainage issues and a new Kansas National Guard armory site were discussed. Appraisers were appointed to determine paying and sewer taxes on affected properties.

lawrence Two Topeka youths questioned in connection with a fatal shooting near Lawrence were taken to Olathe for lie detector tests after paraffin tests showed nitrate traces on their hands. The case centers on Paul Eugene Denning 18 slain near a parked car with no sign of the vehicle. In Pleasanton Kansas Leon Jones 18, a friend of the victim, remains missing after a call from Steamboat Springs Colorado. Authorities plan to send investigators from Denver to Steamboat Springs to pursue the case further.
A Chanute blood drive mobilizes July 5 and 6 with a recruiting committee led by Mrs. Don Abbuehl. Neosho County Red Cross reports about 40 telephoning volunteers as donors are sought to meet summer demand. Blood taken at Neosho Memorial Hospital carries a $5 administration fee. dates and times listed for the drive.
A light gray pickup owned by John Williams was reported stolen last night from beside his storehouse at 1315 S Highland. Police say the theft occurred between 9 and 9 30 p.m. The vehicle carried about five gallons of gasoline and a broadcast description was issued to Southeast Kansas stations.
Wheat growers across four counties will vote tomorrow on nationwide wheat quotas. In Neosho County Tioga and Chanute townships will hold polls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ASC offices and Chanute Memorial Building. A two thirds yes vote would imply 75 to 82 percent parity price support for 1956, while a one third no would set support at 50 percent. Acreage allotments remain in effect for price support.
A severe storm swept Great Bend and nearby areas for about two hours ending around 1:30 a.m. Lightning started minor fires and heavy rain closed highways. Rain totals included 1.68 inches at Great Bend and varied across Hoisington Ellinwood St John Beaver Larned LaCrosse Pawnee Rock. Four motorists pulled off the highway due to zero visibility.
Two teens vie for the 1955 Kansas Women's Amateur golf title as Jean Ashley of Chanute and Mary Frazier of Topeka reach the final after semifinal wins. Ashley defeated Tillie Becker, while Frazier beat Mrs. Howard Dunham to reach a 36 hole final at Shawnee County Club in Topeka.
In Paso Robles California a 19 year old boy was killed when a steak was moved from a barbecue and a chase followed. District Attorney Herbert Grundel said no charges will be filed. Park superintendent Leroy Sherwin accidentally stabbed Walter George Tiessen while chasing him, forgetting he carried a butcher knife and barbecue fork.
New laws effective July 1 tighten teen licensing with restrictions for 14 and 15 year olds and shift to birthday expirations for most licenses. Full two year licenses cost one dollar. chauffeur licenses keep June 30 expirations in odd years. Mufflers, Headlights, and plate rules updated. second license plate rules reduced. chemical blood tests admissible. title and tax transfer fees double. Antique plates get permanent status. cross-state titling requires proof of residency and paid taxes. A separate bill raises truck license fees, effective January 1 next year.
