Local rail workers face looming nationwide strike
United Press International and The Tribune Staff report Santa Fe area officials had not heard of a planned strike by the Brotherhood of Railway Airline and Steamship clerks though some union members exist in Chanute. Nationally as many as 131000 railway employees could walk out at 12:01 a.m. Monday amid stalled talks with the National Railway Labor Conference. The BRAC seeks wage gains, vacation changes, a dental and health plan and strong welfare benefits, per the conference chairman, warning of serious national economic impact.
