The Marion Chamber of Commerce unveils an eight foot wide four foot deep window stuffed with trash as part of an anti litter drive. They gathered milk cartons cans newspapers and debris from one acre of a local park to illustrate the mess.
Conservationist David Brower told the American Association of Landscape Architects that the United States uses two thirds of the world resources while making up six percent of the population. He cited overfishing off Peru and called for correcting ecological errors rather than expanding consumption.
Five Topeka men sue Sedgwick County Sheriff Vern Miller for 527000 claiming improper service of a summons in a Wichita oilman case cost them their own suit against James Hershberger. They say a deputy left the summons with Hershberger's secretary, not in person, causing a judge to dismiss the West Virginia oil rights suit for statute of limitations. The plaintiffs also name Western Surety Co. as a defendant.
President Nixon ordered a July pay raise for nearly 5 million federal workers and military personnel. The boost totals 3.3 billion yearly, averaging 9.1 percent for white collar civilian employees and 4.1 percent for postal workers, lifting overall white collar increases since 1967 to 18.5 percent.
New York Conservative State Sen. John J. Marchi defeated Mayor John V. Lindsay for the Republican nomination while conservative City Comptroller Marie A. Procaccine won the Democratic bid. Lindsay will still appear on the November ballot in a three way race with Marchi and Procaccine as the Liberal candidate remains.
A tornado struck the Council Grove lake area injuring six people. Five were treated and released, one hospitalized with back injuries. The storm destroyed ten cabins and damaged boathouses and power lines in the northwest lake area about fifty miles southwest of Topeka.
The Corps of Engineers ordered a survey team and a vacuum truck to combat a 25 mile oil film from a wrecked barge on the upper Mississippi near Alma Wisconsin. Col. Richard J. Hesse says about 40 000 gallons leaked, rain helped dissipate the slick, and more equipment may be brought in if needed. Wildlife groups fear impacts from the spill.
The area forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions through Thursday. Tonight’s lows 58 to 63 with Thursday highs 86 to 91. Topeka reports no precipitation with a partly cloudy pattern and warm daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Veteran Harry Johnson of Chanute along with 4th Infantry Division comrades visited Utah Beach in Normandy for a private ceremony dedicating a monument. The trip included London Versailles Paris Reims Luxembourg Bonn the Rhine and Dutch cities. Johnson served from July 1944 through the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded twice.
Deborah Fox a Tennessee girl born nearly without a face was rebuilt at Johns Hopkins in a 1342 hour operation. Surgeons moved her eyes inward and began restoring her nose while planning further procedures. She expects to walk, read, and resume schooling in the fall, aiming to work with handicapped children.
