Statehouse Cottonwood Survives Tornado Test
The 100 year old cottonwood on the Statehouse grounds in Topeka withstood a recent tornado. Kansas State University professors L R Quinlan and Charles Parks inspected the historic tree and expect it to live for several more years. Before the storm it stood about 90 feet tall with a 200 foot spread. It is now smaller but alive and in need of some care. A local legend says a cottonwood strip was driven into the ground to anchor construction ropes and grew into a large tree.
