Large crowds attend SeKan-O-Rama centennial pageant at City Park with two bearded contest rounds and a final judging tonight. Attendance nears 3,700 across two days as capacity crowds enjoy the Golden Clippers Saddle Club and a fireworks finale. Centennial queen recrowning by Attorney General Ferguson highlights the event with visiting dignitaries and industry tours preceding the show.
Neosho County faces a looming tax deadline with about 437 213.50 in 1960 unpaid taxes. Treasurer Freda C. Locke notes that final day for second half payments without penalty is next Tuesday June 20. Delinquent notices lead to penalties and sheriff or county action.
The Weather Bureau forecasts gradual improvement over the weekend with a slow warming trend. Partly cloudy skies with little or no further showers, low tonight near 60 and high Saturday near 70. Chanute recorded 72 degrees as Goodland saw 48 and Abilene 59 for overnight lows.

Bert Davis a monument firm manager urged more military band music in Salina Kansas after sending a letter to Senator Frank Carlson. The 100 piece U S Army Field Band will perform September 8 in Salina with a free evening concert and the Soldiers Chorus will also perform. The band will stop in Salina on its way to the American Legion national convention in Denver. Davis said he was crabbing but loves band music and never misses a concert.
Eight year old Ricky Weaver died in a Wichita hospital from burns suffered when his home burned Tuesday. The boy received burns over 98 percent of his body after fleeing flaming nightclothes through a door. His parents Alfred and wife and three other sons escaped via bedroom windows after Ricky searched for him.
The Santa Fe Railway announced an order for 100 flat cars and 150 refrigerator trailers to haul automobiles and perishable goods. Flat cars, 85 feet long, will come from General American Transportation Corp in Chicago, with Fruehauf Trailer Co of Kansas City supplying the trailers.
Ellis Long 71 of Cozad Nebraska died Thursday night from crash injuries. His wife also died in the collision with a dairy truck in Wichita. The wreck occurred Tuesday when Arlis Grim 64 of Wichita drove into the dairy truck driven by Larry Haskins 22 of Argonia Kansas. Grim and Haskins were only slightly hurt.
Tonight features final judging of Brothers of the Brush at 7 45 by Golden Clippers Saddle Club at 8 15 and a third SeKan O Rama pageant show at 8 30 in City Park Stadium followed by fireworks around 10 30 Tomorrow adds Youth talent show at 7 40 and fourth SeKan O Rama at 8 30 with another giant fireworks display in City Park Stadium around 10 30.
James Wayne Farmer 30 was charged with blackmail in Newton Kansas after admitting he obtained 2500 from a 28 year old woman by threatening nude photos. He was arraigned with bond set at 8500. Authorities say no pictures exist and the scheme involved an ex convict. Police recovered 1500 at his Newton home and the incident occurred June 5 in a Newton park. Farmer has prior prison terms and faces additional charges in Wichita.
An appeal has been filed with the state Civil Service Board by Harry C. Inge of Dodge City against a dismissal as a state highway maintenance employee.
President Kennedy urged support for an eight to nine billion dollar five year foreign aid program, saying better to spend a lot now than too little too late. He spoke at a National Conference on International Economic and Social Development as Congress balks at long term funding. David Lilienthal called passing the aid the United States’ greatest opportunity since World War II.
In district court, Joe Sutcliffe and W A Brazil sue Milwaukee Insurance Co of Milwaukee and Bank of Commerce Chanute for more than 50000. They allege an internal explosion caused the collapse of Sutcliffe’s grain storage building on 713 N Highland in Chanute last Nov 8, with 41858 bushels of shelled corn valued at 45625.72. Claimant seeks 25000 plus interest and costs, amid insurance denial and mortgage-clause involvement.
Ciudad Trujillo Dominican Republic AP police said Ramon Roman Fernandez brother of ex Defense Minister Jose Rene Roman Fernandez who is being held in connection with Rafael Trujillo's assassination shot himself Thursday night He was about 45 and survived by his widow and a 17 year old son Jose Roman
Salina AP report says Lawrence Eugene Klein warns the thief may not be hungry after seven Brussels sprouts two cabbages and several onion plants were stolen from his garden The garden had been treated with bug spray.
A 19 year old from New Haven Conn Ernest Moorer admitted shooting a Denver liquor store owner during a 25 dollar stickup on December 17 The owner Rocco Smaldone identified him as the gunman after spending 44 days in hospital Moorer had abandoned a football scholarship at Dodge City Kas College and changed his plea to guilty during the trial District Judge Joseph F Cook set a probation hearing for July 10 Moorer's lawyers say he did not adjust well to college life or athletics
Two groups of six male patients escaped from locked wards at the Nevada Missouri mental hospital about 9:30 p.m. Authorities described them as non criminals though the alert labeled them violent. Names include Clarence Arnold Johnny Percival Jerry Hayes William Bragg Robert Andrews and Bill Baggett with origins in Springfield Warrensburg Independence and Nevada.
Police in Tallahassee arrested ten Freedom Riders at the city airport and three other individuals for refusing to disperse. The arrests followed a sit-in by clergy members supporting access to the closed airport restaurant. In Ocala, three Freedom Riders were later taken into custody for attempting to enter the bus station during the integration test ride.
Walter Lippman on CBS says Khrushchev fears West Germany's atomic weapons within five years and demands a Berlin settlement to prevent war in Europe. He cites a Russia meeting where Khrushchev urged fixed frontiers and warns of potential aggression if Germany acts militarily. He criticizes Kennedy’s early presidency as lacking through legislation to restore U.S. prestige.
A boxcar derailed near Junction City halting the Union Pacific main line for hours. The freight car left tracks after dropping a journal, tearing up several feet of track. One passenger train was delayed five hours and another two hours until repairs were completed.
