66 000 Volts Fatal To Kansas City Man

Kansas City Power and Light supervisor Henry Dan Smith aged 47 died after coming into contact with 66 000 volt circuit breakers yesterday. An exploding breaker he was working on sprayed his face and he died after hospitalization. The accident caused a temporary power outage in the metropolitan Kansas City area.

Permanent Chance Good For KOP

Parsons officials heard from Frank H. Higgins assistant secretary of the Army for logistics that the Kansas Ordnance Plant has a good chance for permanent status. Higgins and technical officers toured the facility and said employment should reach 700 by August as the plant operates limited modernization of 105 millimeter artillery shells. Army ordnance officers will study production needs to see if new items can be assembled at KOP to boost jobs.

Pvt James A. Viano of West Frankfort Illinois died in Ft. Riley hospital from injuries after his car struck a tree in Manhattan Kansas early yesterday. The crash occurred here and the soldier died last night.

Area Wheat Harvest Shows High Yields Across Four Counties

Four county wheat harvests report strong yields with 25 to 40 bushels an acre common and several fields reaching 50. Test weights mostly 60 to 63 pounds, quality high, with moisture under 13 percent. Harvest pace varies by locality from peak in Neosho to early in Iola and Chanute areas.

State's Attorney Plans a Ruling On Paint Case

Kansas Attorney General John Anderson said he will review records to determine if the $238,731 highway paint contracts violated the law after bids totaled more than the $296,778 offered by apparent low bidders. The highway commission defended its process, asserting no product met all specifications and that value, not low price alone, governed awards.

Neosho Plant To Build Rocket Engines For Missiles

North American Aviation and the Air Force announced a government owned $13 million plant to be built in Neosho Missouri for large rocket engines. The Rocketdyne division will operate the facility scheduled to open late this year with about 1000 workers by early 1957 and an initial payroll near five million dollars. Joseph P. McNamara was named manager of the Neosho facility.

Bridegroom Drops 6000 Feet From Plane Door on Honeymoon

Oren Ase Pruitt 38 of Charlotte dies after plunging from an open door of a Piedmont Airlines flight near Shelby North Carolina on the way to Asheville. He and his bride had wed Tuesday in York South Carolina and were honeymooning to meet her parents. Authorities note possible alcohol odor but the wife disputes drinking. Senate Okays Funds for Dams Area Project Hearing

CHERRYVALE Kansas U S Army Engineers of Tulsa held a hearing on Big Hill reservoir east of Cherryvale as part of a feasibility survey. The $2 million project would flood control reserve water and recreation with a 60 foot dam about half a mile long, five miles reservoir, 25 miles shoreline and 30 000 acre feet impounded. Representatives from area towns and farmers attended. E W Johnson urged support saying flood control is vital. The report outlines flood control, navigation, power and reclamation funding approved by the Senate for Kansas projects including Abilene Salina Topeka and several reservoirs with planning and reconciliation steps.

Woman Paroled After Pleading Guilty in Fornication Case

Mrs. Lorene Dryden of Chanute was paroled from a Lansing state prison sentence of one to five years after pleading guilty in District Court to maintaining a place of fornication. The trial was set for next Monday. two additional cases were added to the jury docket by Judge B M Dunham. Clyde Webb’s trial for assault with intent to kill and resisting arrest was set for next Thursday. S W Mayes of Chanute appealed probate court for that day. Mary Dent’s damage suit against Calvin Hurford was moved from Wednesday to Thursday.
