Postal rates frozen and extra USPS subsidy approved

The Senate Post Office Committee voted 8 to 1 to freeze postal rates temporarily and provide a $1 billion subsidy to the U.S. Postal Service. The bill creates a commission to report by February 15, 1977 and would require 60 percent local support before closing post offices. It also defers service cutbacks and includes funding for 1977 and 1978.

Bell Telephone seeks more revenue in Kansas directory aid

A Southwestern Bell spokesman said Kansas Corporation Commission approval of 10 cent charges per directory assistance call will not cover the cost of handling calls. The ECC allowed five free calls per period and two numbers per call, with charges applying beyond the limit.

KP&L seeks 23 percent rate hike in Kansas

KP&L filed with the Kansas Corporation Commission for authority to raise rates for about 251,000 customers by an average 23 percent or 31.4 million annually. Residential bills could rise about 4.40 monthly. not all customers are affected. A separate case sets a new fuel cost adjustment method to cut bills via lower energy costs from neighboring utilities.
