Kansas Wheat Prospects Up For 1972 Crop

Blood drives short of goal at Chanute event

Weekend Area Forecast Shows Warm, Partly Cloudy Skies

Partly cloudy and warm today with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Winds shift to the northwesterly by evening, with highs 88 to 95. Tonight will see variable cloudiness and cooler conditions, lows 60 to 65. Sunday brings highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Gas Report Set For City Monday

Frank Hoblick of Carthage Missouri will report to the City Commission at 4 p.m. Monday on his survey of the city gas system begun in 1971 with interim reports already given. The commission will hear bids from Wilson and Company of Salina and Cook Flatt and Strobel of Topeka for an engineering study of the sewer system and will set a bid letting date for Memorial Building court complex renovations. They will consider a water rate ordinance, two annexations west of the city, a Larson paving petition, a liquor license refund for Hansen's Retail Liquor, street name changes to 14th Street Circle, a beer license for Farmers Discount Center, and three policy resolutions including a new sanitation posts salary schedule and clerical allowances for the municipal judge.

Emergency Landing Injures Three in McGovern Flight

A United Airlines jet carrying U S Senator George McGovern evacuated on landing in Pittsburgh after a bomb threat. Three people were injured fleeing an emergency chute though McGovern was unharmed. no bomb was found. The threat originated by phone to New York police.

Kleindienst cites 1600 wiretap cases. DOJ cites 490

Philadelphia AP report says Attorney General Kleindienst claimed 1600 court supervised surveillances over 32 years produced 700 indictments. DOJ spokesman John Wilson said records show 490 tailed, with 2140 arrests and 460 convictions by Jan 1, and noted errors in the AG’s figures.

Recreation program expands with daily summer activities

Beginning Monday six week series offers crafts at Central Park supervised by Tom Arthur with Women’s Arts and Crafts arrangements. Boys gymnastics at Royster gym with Keith Cochran followed by age groups. Tot Lot at Central Park supervised by Jill Dimond five days a week. Junior tennis at NCCC courts led by Lyle Dean and Carolyn Kensett. Youth and adult golf lessons at Safari course taught by Charles Burgtorf. Tap dancing, children’s theater, and adult tennis also scheduled weekly at Central Park and Highland Park venues. Shuffleboard and a Wednesday movie matinee complete the list of activities with no admission.
