Chanute weighs sewer plant options amid 7.2 million plan

City officials and 16 state and federal representatives met to decide whether to build a new wastewater facility south of Chanute or upgrade the existing plant. Engineering firm Allgeier Martin & Associates cites a new plant and line improvements at 7.2 million, with possible savings if upgrading the old plant. Representatives return June 28 to discuss financing.

CBD merchants urge improvements in restaurants and traffic

Wichita economist Jim Gardner told CBD merchants that surveys mailed to 79 businesses showed restaurants as the top improvement need in the Central Business District with parking and traffic next. He noted that property owners and CBD merchants would bear the lion’s share of costs and that attention from sales staff and product pricing rated highly.

First Tree Board Planting Sees One Third Die

About 33 percent of 125 trees planted by the Tree Board have died. Chairman Jack Colburn said replacements will be added this fall. Redbuds were most affected as they are hard to transplant and may have dried out quickly.

Builders Improve Chanute With May Permit Boom

Chanute issued 27 building permits in May totaling 399310 dollars. Martin Tractor Co. secured a 338000 dollar permit to build a facility in Safari Industrial Park and relocate from East Main Street. Home repairs and alterations accounted for 45000 dollars across nine permits, with garages porches driveways and other projects also approved.

Rural health institute takes root in Chanute

KU Medical Center officials affirmed a rural health care institute for southeast Kansas at the former Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital. The state funds 34 thousand dollars for the first year and initial planning begins with a Chanute site evaluation. The program aims to recruit physicians, provide continuing education, and offer intermediate patient care between acute and home or nursing home care.

Weather forecast shows clear to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures with highs near 90 today and lower to mid 60s at night. CBD Policy Plan committee surveys of 202 shoppers and 202 returns from 555 residents reveal railroad crossing as top improvement, general appearance second, cleanliness third, and attractiveness fourth. About 40 percent would shop more in the CBD if stores were open evenings, 28 percent on Sundays, and 2 percent shop less after removing meters. Conversations note main reasons for shopping elsewhere include merchandise variety and prices, with 114 citing convenience at CBD stores. The Tribune subscription is high, and radio advertising impact shows KKOY and KQSM as common listening choices.

Jaco continuing education expands at NCCJC with in service programs for rural health institute and KU support. Dog tag licenses decline in Chanute five years running

City records show Chanute issued 99 dog tags from January through June this year while 1972 data reach 129 by June. City officials consider owner licensing effort and vaccination proof key, with potential increases to 3 dollars for males and 4.50 for unspayed females. payments due January to March.
