Chanute Plan discussed at USD 413 meeting

USD 413 board discussed the Chanute Plan at Chanute Senior High School with input from Tim Erickson and community members. They approved guidelines for high school guidance counseling and a school philosophy for elementary grades while planning next year’s in service training and bids for lunch facilities and a 22 passenger bus.

Bomb blasts hit downtown Chicago injuring five

Four downtown buildings including police headquarters were struck by bombs. Five people were injured, two seriously, as a terrorist gang likely claimed responsibility. Victims included a pregnant woman and her husband in guarded condition at Henrotin Hospital.

Chanute High School Coach Named to State Council

Helen Anderson a Chanute High School physical education instructor will represent AAAA schools on a nine member advisory council to the Kansas State High School Athletic Association. Her appointment was announced Monday night at the USC 413 school board meeting. She says the council will gauge programs and problems now that girls athletics are more prevalent and will make recommendations to the state on girls athletic programs.

Kansas Roads Face Reversion to Gravel Amid Soaring Asphalt Costs

Kansas counties buckle as asphalt costs rise from eight or nine cents to 32 cents per gallon since 1950. Sealing a mile costs about 3 000 dollars while rock roads run 800 to 900 dollars annually. Marion Greenwood and Butler counties have torn up significant asphalt, reducing mileage to about 120 miles in some areas. Officials warn only maintaining needed asphalt is economical. otherwise roads may stay gravel long term.

Charges Filed Against KG and E Over Nuclear Referendum

Kansas Gas & Electric Co was charged with violating state law by illegal contributions to opponents of a California nuclear power referendum. The charges were filed in Sedgwick County District Court after a conference between state and county prosecutors. KG&E planned a nuclear plant with Kansas City Power & Light.

Water reserve plan centerpiece for Chanute Commission meeting

The Chanute City Commission will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Building to discuss a drought water reserve application from state lakes and reservoirs, plus a recommendation by Charles Hight of Hight Jackson & Associates on the public works building.
